I hate that hn encourages this type of obnoxious headline. Just tragic. I feel this sort of pitiful neglect is what republicans think when they say "let the market find a solution".
You know what would be awesome? Someone who gives a f about the quality of this website. I'm looking at you, PG.
The website and app are now blocking access unless you log in.
I feel like this is a case of geniuses doing stupid shit that any normal person would never do. They probably have some subtle economics/psychology argument to justify this decision.
I understand wanting to associate contributors with real world identities, but it is SAD to see this sort of dysfunctional behavior from such a promising and valuable service.
This is an absurd and outrageous statement. Akin to the full pay glossy ads for oil companies in Vanity Fair with messages like "We care about people and nature".
M$ is serious about embrace, extend, extinguish. M$ is not serious about supporting the computing community, is not serious about creating powerful platforms, and has gone out of its way to serious damage the knowledge economy.
Microsoft will destroy this technology just like it destroys everything it touches. Microsoft is the Chuck Bass of computing. If you get that reference, you are probably looking at someone else's computer right now.
The thing you see in front of you is, perhaps 10% Microsoft and 90% the work of a small number of dedicated individuals. Microsoft has shown a track record of destroying good technology and ignoring the community standards process.
I sincerely hope that someone rips this idea off and liberates it from Microsoft. Typed JavaScript is not patentable or copyright-able, and Google beat the daylights out of Oracle over Java, so I think this is fair game.
tl;dr I give this project 18 months before the M$ business machine starts using TypeScript as a weapon.
Hah! HN has definitely gotten worse over the last 5 years. You may have gotten smarter, but HN is now a major news hub for a VERY VERY VERY FUCKING DESIRABLE DEMOGRAPHIC.
So there is about 1000% more spam and maybe 20% more useful posts. C'est la vie.
This needs to be reported as an invalid story to HN.
This is a case where the submitter has not read the article. The abstract clearly states that the intervention is NOT exercise. Rather it is "encouragement" to exercise. Basically they're nagging you to take a walk around the block.
So I'm not surprised that nagging a depressed person to go to the gym helps in any way, shape or form. It's pretty sad that someone would do this study, really.
Regular exercise is, in fact, good for the body, heart, and brain. I would get at least 45 minutes of exercise a week, although I've heard that more is better.
So I post the first verse of "Damn it feels good to be a gangsta" by the geto boys, and I see it gets censored.
I'm pissed. This is, in my opinion, brilliant commentary on the OP displaying my genius and superior wit. And I see how far this gets me. Your small mind can't grasp what I'm trying to communicate, so you shut it out. That's a shame, because if you listened, you would understand the deeper meaning of all of this back and forth.
But I see how it is, you can't handle anything that isn't sanitized. Pity.
Damn it feels good to be a gangsta
A real gangsta-ass nigga plays his cards right
A real gangsta-ass nigga never runs his fuckin mouth
'cause real gangsta-ass niggas don't start fights
And niggas always gotta high cap
Showin' all his boys how he shot em
But real gangsta-ass niggas don't flex nuts
'cause real gangsta-ass niggas know they got em
And everythings cool in the mind of a gangsta
'cause gangsta-ass niggas think deep
Up three-sixty-five a year 24/7
'cause real gangsta ass niggas don't sleep
First of all, cheap ads are not a bad thing. Cheap ads are like cheap oil: sure, it may put some oil companies out of business who can't deliver product efficiently, but this has no impact on the rest of the economy.
Second (I can't believe I'm actually defending FB) a lot of people go to the site. If FB can maintain control of the social internet and, frankly, suck less, they will own a massive channel. Part of the trick is controlling a bunch of social networks. This would would allow FB to set ad prices on all networks like a cartel.
Third, if you see a price war between Google and FB, then everyone who wants to advertise on the web wins. Yes, start-ups that hope to capitalize on ad-supported services suffer, but the rest of the web, not to mention the economy, pays no attention.
MSFT made some decisions without really A) thinking about or B) caring about the consequences. Their MO from day 1 is to screw everyone else and become fabulously wealthy in the process.
"What's shocking to me is the blatant manipulation of the mob."
Wait. What? You're "shocked"?
Um.
This is 2012, you know. Mobs are made to be manipulated. That's pretty much the whole point of a mob. Mobs do not win Nobel Prizes in physics. They do not negotiate peace treaties.
And, by the way, journalism is essentially the precursor to 4chan (trolls trolling trolls trolling...)
I honestly thought Dave McClure was a multi-millionaire. Apparently not.
The rich people I have interacted with and observed are huge dorks. They may be decent, hard-working people, fair, and generous, but they are ultimately dorks. Why? You can ask that of a psychologist, but it all comes down to a big word, "dis-inhibition". Basically if all of the people around you treat you like royalty, you tend to act like a jerk. See "The Emperor's New Groove" for details.
Silicon Valley, as the engine / furnace of American Capitalism, could use a lot fewer dorks and lot more hard-working, honest, thoughtful people like Dave. That is all.
1. Eliezer S. Yudkowsky was 17 when he wrote his article.
2. Yudkowsky's article starts off with unfalsifiable nonsense and unwarranted speculation about the future course of evolution.
3. IQ can't be improved? Are you ....... kidding me? Raven's progressive matrices are a book. A book. You practice for 2 hours each year, you're going to get the hang of it. I'm sorry, this is such bs I can't believe anyone other than the most insecure Stanford undergrad would buy into this snake oil.
