These economists love aggrandizing each other by referring to each other's work as "magnum opuses" and "tour de force", similar to handing out their faux nobel prize annually to the trendy economist of the moment. It is all part of their attempt to try to legitimise their vague beliefs as science.

Environmentalism is one belief which could power future communities.

It is something we can all agree is important, something families can get plenty of enjoyment out of, something we can get together on a Sunday morning to work towards, provides a place for music, discussion, a good place for group holiday getaways, a unanimously good cause which is becoming more and more important as world population increases and the environment comes under more and more threat.

It doesn't require any faith or belief in made up deities. It doesn't make false promises of a wonderful afterlife but instead focuses on preservation of the earth for your own ancestors - something which could be considered a more motivating goal than eternal afterlife.

This is all wrong.

Small underground tunnels covering entire cities with autonomous delivery bots on wheels which automatically take the fastest route from any given A to B with a generic size/shaped payload are the real solution to this issue.

Horizontal drilling technologies mean that we can bore a 30 metre long tunnel while only digging up the first 3 metres.

Imagine all the industries this would revolutionise. All shopping and food ordering would become completely price and quality-driven, as realestate prices and premium spots are no longer relevant. last 10 mile package delivery would cost tens of cents.

Automated subterranean transport is the REAL future of automated delivery.

In many cities uber is paying drivers a guaranteed $40 per hour to drive regardless of fares during peak times.

In many places uber is currently an unsustainable, heavily subsidised operation which would fail in free market conditions, but because of their big stash of VC $$ they are able to survive while eating away at taxi driver market share.

I did a stint in a rural bangladeshi hospital while a medical student.

I went on an outreach camp with an opthalmologist. In one village we saw dozens of elderly people partially or fully blind from cataracts. None of them could afford the surgery. I asked the opthalmologist how much the operation was and he said "$40 each", so I said "ok choose the 20 people who need this operation the most and ill give you the $800". They put 20 of them in minivans and took them to the hospital the next day and all 20 got their operations. Had a whole ward of really delighted people.
