While not offered directly by the government, TaxHawk is great: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=43220854
Of course, the US is a business that is very good at making money. Services like healthcare, education, transport and even filing taxes are designed to make a profit.
It makes for a very hollow society, but lots of profit.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Trump regime collects the names of people who used the free service, and then charges them a "fine" to repay for the costs incurred.
Trump (and historically others) ability to play the populist card, and really be about as anti populist as it gets is a little depressing.
Without this free file service - the only other option offered by the federal government for all income levels is Free Fillable Forms, which is owned and implemented by the Free File Alliance LLC.
If I want to submit directly to the federal government, I have to mail my return in.
How can this be the status quo in 2025?
