Would be very curious to hear what someone with some actual investment acumen thinks of this. My layman’s opinion is that I’d rather invest in the chip suppliers and cloud compute providers, who are ultimately going to be the sink for all this cash.
I completely disagree. I think GPT companies will make an absolute killing in the next few years. They can provide automation on steroids. Here [1] is a list of 10 unicorns from 2021. Everything they can do, GPT bots can do better.
Of course, the competition in the GPT space will be absolutely brutal. There's no reason to think the 10 unicorns listed there can not roll their own GPT bots. Or that 10 new GPT startups won't appear between now and the end of this year. Ah, ... make that 100.
Still, if you are a VC, you invest in what exists right now.

If your “secret sauce” is OpenAI’s proprietary models, OpenAI is going to end up making all the money.
It's actually the opposite. The article here is talking about a round of funding for an OpenAI competitor. I claim that all startups that leverage GPT have a plausible value proposition. They absolutely do not depend on OpenAI.
Here's the thing: building a GPT bot is not that difficult, you can do it with a few lines of keras, for example [1]. The difficult part is training one. Presumably once you trained one, you can train another one. That's why the maker of Stable Diffusion is valuable.

How much money do the chipmakers extract from computing?

What businesses have the secret sauce being the proprietary features of one vendors chips? Heck, a number of the big computing companies (in various areas) also have custom silicon.

Number 1 on the list is ByteDance. I don’t think GPT chat bots are going to replace TikTok.

Stability.ai @ $4bn USD is a little more than HuggingFace's raise @ $2bn USD last year in May 2022, but 2x is still in the same ballpark. HuggingFace has a huge an unquestionable public presence, though.
Like others in this thread, I am curious to learn how they're going to ever generate the investment money and a profit. Would be interesting to see the investor pitch deck they used.

I'm not too familiar with Stability AI, but didn't they essentially only provide resources to LMU researchers in Munich who developed the Model?
Are the stable diffusion authors now part of the company?
I wonder how the authors feel to see this valuation that is mostly based on their architecture, without proper attribution.

What?
It would suck if it just turns into another OpenAI variant. Owing money to a bunch of VCs is not going to have a positive effect any way you look at it.
