The lack of any pictures to show what the market was supposed to look like makes the article dreary. Maybe that's the style the mag is going for, but I don't think it's a good choice for this subject.
I thought the language was evocative enough to not need pictures, but after reading I went looking for pictures to see if it matched what was in my head. Here's a blog post with a bunch:
