Amazon must be so happy that this happened. It started right at the end of the AWS partial downtime, and has completely recontextualized how badly a service provider can screw things up.
Does PSN have any nines at this stage?
10% of one year is 36.5 days, so they still have time to be completely up before they're below one nine if you use a rolling one year window.
They have one nine at the moment (for the year and overall).
If they stay up for another 2 years with absolutely no additional downtime then they'll reach 2 nines of uptime over the entire service life.

I believe they've had other minor outages, but overall, the lifetime of the service seems to have somewhere around 98.4% uptime. That's counting since November of 2006, when I believe the PSN launched alongside the PS3.
People pay to host things on AWS. PSN is a free service. They shut down PSN because of the data breach. Their screwup was in allowing customer data to be stolen, not in closing the network down.
Being a free service isn't exactly a reasonable justification for "you get what you get", though. You can pay for PSN+, but either way, it's still using the same network service and it's the only option. It's not like there's a pay-for option that you can say "well, if you care about uptime, you should have subscribed to the pay-for PSN service". Additionally, it's the service that is essentially part of and supplemental to the entire PS3 purchase. It's great that it's free, in that you're not losing anything with the downtime, but it's not even remotely the same thing as providing some sort of a free/beta community service website that goes down and being able to say "hey, it's a free website, what do you want from us?".
That said, I've been eager for PSN to get back so I can register my PS3 copy of Portal 2 to use on the PC and so that I could play Killzone. It's amusing that the only two titles I will probably buy on that platform in the entire year came out near the same time and were hindered by the outage.

Nonsense. You buy a PS3 BECAUSE you can play online games. Whether you do that or not, it's part of the package.
Their screw up was letting the network be down so long, being hacked TWICE, preventing any of the game producers from earning money while the PSN is down, preventing their customers from playing games they bought, etc. etc.

Wonder what they have been doing, for a service of this size, seems to be one of the slowest responses I have ever seen. If a startup had similar downtime they would probably find themselves out of business. Luck Sony has network effects and the large outlay people have made on the console and games I guess.

How are they able to break down the restoration by state? Are they doing it by IP? By account? (I never told them where I live)
I realize this isn't an "adds a lot of value comment," but...

Any word on what they actually changed? Would be interesting to know what they did differently this time around.
