I don't know whether this is a great option for the participating firms (and would LOVE to hear data on that if someone wants to share -- hint hint Paras), but for young startups it is absolutely incredible. I've used three of these. Focused application of A/B testing or the insights you get from CrazyEgg prints money. If it was the price keeping you from using them, buying this is a no-brainer.
RescueTime was approached by AppSumo (Noah Kagan) and we did it. It's a no-brainer for the participating firms.
SaaS has nearly 100% margins-- the only meaningful cost is people (sunk cost) and customer acquisition (hella crazy hard/expensive once you try to scale beyond WoM).
Being a company that participates in these deals gets you:
1) A bunch of (largely) non-paying users. Maybe you get a few grand in revenue. Meh. But some subset of those will get addicted and will be full price to renew.
2) A ton of links. Hellloooooo SEO.
3) A ton of new people talking about you. Hellooooo word of mouth.
Definitely a great option.

My only worry with flash sales, from the selling software perspective, is that I worry you're probably going to get a metric tonne of pathological tire kickers who take disproportionate support and fail to renew at the real price. If that didn't happen to you, I'm happy for you and everyone else.

patio11 highly suggests Crazyegg and I was thinking about getting it for the $10/mn or so that it is, but this deal is amazing. For someone who has never done A/B testing or website optimization, this is an amazing deal to help get my startup off the ground!

I bought it and it seems to be good, though some of it is a little misleading.
The Crazy Egg offer claims to be worth $228 for a year, which would make you think that you're getting the $19/month plan, but it's actually a plan that's 1000 visits per month and only tracks one page (<5% of the $19/month plan).
The Clicky offer claims to be valid for both new and free users, but there's not a way to upgrade a free account with a discount code, and the Clicky guys haven't yet responded to my email. (I'll update here when they do.)

I feel like anything that's applicable to hackers/startups belongs here. I think most people were quite excited when the O'Reilly $9.99 sale was posted here a few months back.
I would usually agree with you and hit the "flag" link, but having paid full price for a few of these apps, I think it's such a surprising deal that it's worth talking about.

Agreed. Tons of scrappy startups on here that could use a deal like this on tools that could help them with company.

These are all really highly regarded services for startups, it seems like HN would be the perfect place to post about this deal.
