I’m not happy with how Backblaze handled informing affected users at all.
They were aware of it on March 21 and said that they “were preparing a communication with affected users at that time”.
I received an email about that only yesterday.
That’s 52 days it took them to write me an email which imo just isn’t good enough and afaik does not conform with the GDPR requirements for data breaches.
Here’s an analogy I like to use for people who don’t care about privacy; Its similar to not caring about free speech just because you have nothing to say. It’s not just about you the regular joe who is of no particular interest to companies/governments but about those people who absolutely need it.
You not caring about what they do with your data is totally fine but in my opinion you should care that they (in this case Google) have not only yours but everyone’s data. It’s astonishing what you can do with just some metadata. You can influence groups of people like never before. Swing Elections & change governments. Influence public opinion about literally everything to no small degree.
You’re not just giving them your uninteresting data you’re also giving them an enormous amount of power.
Not who you asked and I’m not up to date when it comes to the world of video streaming but personally I’d prefer a web where content creators would have to pay to distribute their content. Pay as in have some server, domain, bandwidth and whatnot. It’s then up to the creator to decide how/if to monetize their content. Just like the old days.
Perhaps not the best example for how abstract something is. The 18650 battery cells that most electric vehicles use looks very similar to an AA battery. You certainly couldn’t tell them apart from an icon.

Personally I’m using a Xiaomi Mi Smart Band 4 on iOS 13 with an open source on device firewall. That way I can still use the official Apps like MiFit or AmazFit to sync all data to Apple Health without it being uploaded from their App to elsewhere. Make sure to use iOS12 or upwards and you’ll have to enable 2 Factor Authentication in order for your Apple Health data to be end to end encrypted.
I’m not sure how Android holds up but it should be possible to achieve something similar there, I’d guess. On Android there are third party Apps for syncing which should make things easier.
Pros:
* Mi Band 4 is very cheap
* Reliable HR, steps, activity & sleep tracking
* Easy and quick setup
* > 20 days battery life
* Custumizable watch faces
* 5ATM water resistant
Cons:
* Xiaomi and Huami are Chinese companies
* No always on display (but raising watch turns on display)
* Some data could leak should the firewall fail
* Currently no third party Apps for syncing to iOS
