Range allows teams to stay in sync and feel connected, even in today’s increasingly distributed workplaces. At its core, Range is a virtual stand-up that integrates with all your work tools to provide transparency and knowledge discovery. As part of a daily check-in, team members answer team-building questions and share their mood, a simple process that builds trust and psychological safety.

One thing we didn't talk much about is if it's...a good idea. I imagine many of these folks will switch back into the technical track for a bit. But the reality that Tess speaks to is that many more experienced eng managers are burning out (pandemic management has been no joke), and so companies are tapping on earlier career folks to step into management. For folks who don't opt out of that situation, how do you make the most of it?
Good point--I should have clarified, but this is more often a referral. I should have called it "first point of contact" or something more appropriate. Often we don't get the actual resume in into much later in the process...
For the one-day projects, we typically do not give projects of things we might use, for that reason. We give a sort of related simple app. We are currently < 20 so we'll see how this goes once we expand beyond that =)
A great point he makes is about friends and family (especially those not in silicon valley)--it's hard for them to understand why you would give up a stable job for uncertainty.
Thanks for the comment. If you check out my blog you will see that I do write about other topics, but it seems like the ones that are most popular on HN (or in general?) are the ones about gender.
Not because of the comment in the video, but because I can't imagine that that startup culture and living/working space would be appealing to any female engineer.
There are a lot of good programmers that don't code for fun outside of class. I didn't code in my internship interviews, but I certainly did during my 12 week internship, and the two conversion interviews I had at the end of the internship. Whether or not that was harder than that guy's interview process is debatable, but that's the way I looked at for awhile.
I've been to Palantir a few times for dinner, and almost everyone there wears Palantir t-shirts. They give out one for each release, and it looks like they're each themed around an element of the periodic table. The critical part is that they are nice shirts (American apparel), and really nicely designed. They also seem to order women's sizes.
I don't think it's either of those--I think it's a natural progression of a startup whose composition is pretty much entirely of young people straight out of school who don't have as many obligations outside of work, as say, someone with a spouse and kids (I have a spouse, but no kids). We're all trying to get on better schedules, and my post was was in no way a criticism of how things are run at Pulse.
Glad to hear this perspective, as a lot of early comments were on the other end of the spectrum. Still finding my way in startup world, but it's encouraging to hear others who have been there and managed to make it work!
Yes, I'd imagine it'd be quite different for employees and founders. I don't know if I'm willing to make that kind of sacrifice though--maybe that means I'm not cut out to be a founder. Or maybe I haven't found the right opportunity yet.
