South Australia does not have cheaper electricity bills. We also had a multi-day outage in 2016 which was partially due to wind generators shedding load. Large scale solar also periodically turn off rather than pay to add power to the grid due to too much installed capacity and no suitable storage.
At what cost? we've saved a few 80 year olds, but lost hundreds of younger people via suicide and created a huge long tail of mental health problems along with poor educational outcomes (Australian here).

on currently published numbers the death rate is around one death per 30 infections. (25th January, 41 people dead from 1287 infections). According to wikipedia the spanish flu had a death rate of 1 in 50 (although the numbers may not be that reliable), so until more is known about transmission it should prompt precautions.
My meaning was that it is too far for a transmission line to make sense, and once the transmission line gets to South Australia (the state closest to Western Australia) you have only delivered the power to a state with the same problem - too much solar without enough storage. A better way to solve the problem would be to prohibit new installs of rooftop solar without an accompanying battery system.
This won't happen because it would be politically difficult, and because the power companies would lose a lot of money as consumption fell through the floor. They don't want too much battery for a while because this would require them to move from a usage model to a majority fixed fee billing. To reduce public outrage the changeover needs to be slow.
South Australian here - In South Australia keep in mind commercial scale solar is also generating against residential rooftop solar which is sold back via a feed in tarrif to the generator at a contracted fixed rate. The generators have to pay for (and take) this power. In some cases 20 year contracts where signed some time ago with feed-in tariffs much higher than what they ever should have been. This has resulted in early adapters making thousands in cash every year from residential solar (and still doing so). Everyone else is paying for it of course. Feed-in tarrifs available for contracts signed today are much lower, but some of these contracts still have a few years to run. Without more storage solar will continue to reduce reliability and add costs.
A tool with a camera and other sensors you can log into remotely and drive wherever you like in Washington (for example) and then have it loiter while it beams data back to china. Sounds like a plan!
On remote beaches I have visited in Australia there are large items but nothing like the amount of small items in this photo. I wonder if you could use machine learning to automatically classify plastic in photos like this based on color and shape. People could then submit all photos like this from all over the world to build a database of plastic levels, which could be used with ocean currents to provide source information. Maybe it has happened.
Exactly. Create the right conditions with little grazing pressure and reduced weed competition and regeneration will often happen naturally. There may be technical solutions to bump this along but for most situations this will not be it. Where replanting is being conducted in the third world and this drone is used instead of local planters it might increase community resentment and disengagement. Working with communities on more sustainable livelihoods and helping them understand the reasons why it is better for everyone if some areas are left un-grazed for periods and allowed to regenerate is not easy but without local buy-in nothing will last.
