If anything, remote can strengthen US's monopoly on global talent in the short-term.
The friction for US companies to attract global talent is now even lower. Now you don't even need to apply for an H1B visa to be physically in the US to work for a US company.
However, since the talent is not physically based in the US, this can be a great thing for countries everywhere in the long-run. GDPs are created remotely for countries around the world, and the knowledge these global talent gain by working with US companies will be dispersed around the world.
Hundreds of ecosystems will bloom around the world, leveling the playing field.
Given that the entire world won't be having offline events for a while, we've created a directory of all the virtual developer conferences, dev meetups, and hackathons that are accessible anywhere.
Learning and growing outside of work shouldn't stop while we're all working from home. And especially at this moment of social distancing, online events can keep us socially engaged and less isolated while working from home.
Please help us spread the word and add any virtual developer events to the directory!
We later realized that although they've gotten a good amount of upvotes & comments, actually many of them came from possible fake accounts / bots ... (fake photos, no past PH/twitter activities, etc)
While I'm amused, some of my colleagues were quite offended by this.
Our product manager, who wrote the original copy on Arc, had this comment upon seeing this:
"They actually copied our entire developer application form, I realized that because I was thinking, man they really wrote these like how I would talk in real life, it’s because I came up with all the wording and they just copied them verbatim…….well, they swapped out “cup of joe” for “cup of coffee”. This is highly upsetting"
We're excited to announce Arc today! We aim to change the way we hire and work remotely.
My first startup SocialPicks (YC 07!) was actually a remote company back in 2006. I was based in the Bay Area, co-founder Keven was in Vancouver, and our lead dev Olivier was in Toronto. This was pre-Slack, pre-Zoom, pre-Trello. I guess we’re the OG’s of the remote world. Back then it was actually quite hard to grow our remote team, as this would require, essentially, trusting strangers on the internet to join us on the intense rollercoaster ride of startup life.
Fast forward to today: The bulk of remote hiring services are still focused on finding short-term freelancers, rather than thinking of remote work as a genuine full-time employment option. It’s clear that the friction of going remote is still too high for many organizations and individuals. This is why we are launching Arc today: to offer a complete remote hiring solution to find full-time remote developers and build remote engineering teams.
We're introducing Arc early to get feedback from the HN community. As we work to reduce the friction of hiring remotely for both sides of the hiring equation, we invite you - developers and organizations alike - to join us on this journey.

In the startup world, people always say that building an awesome team is critical to the startup’s success. But how do you decide the team composition of your first 10 hires?
As a founder I’ve always wondered, when’s the most appropriate time for your first non-technical hire? How about the first office manager? HR specialist?
To answer some of these questions, we at Codementor researched the first employees of world’s top tech companies - Airbnb, Dropbox, Uber, and more.

Since our launch in 2014, Codementor (https://www.codementor.io) has grown to become a vibrant marketplace for live 1:1 mentorship in software development.
Many developers in our community have found the live 1:1 format to be a one-of-a-kind and rewarding experience. Yet, the nature of this kind of mentorship means only one person benefits from the expert mentor’s knowledge and time.
With Codementor Community, we’re expanding what it means to provide mentorship to software developers. It is a learning community where developers can easily share their knowledge with a broader audience, exchange ideas, and learn from each other.
We’ve also built a lightweight, developer-friendly, markdown-powered editor (https://www.codementor.io/write) that makes writing enjoyable and distraction-free. Share what you’ve been working on, write a technical tutorial, discuss the latest technologies, and more. We even offer an optional grammar review!
This is only a small step in our journey to become a learning community for everyone from senior developers to beginners and everyone in between, and we understand there may still be many important features missing.
