Inputting Unicode in X Windows is easy. Just type:

  setxkbmap -option compose:ralt

Now, right Alt (AltGr) is your compose key.

Then, for example:

  à is Compose + ` + a
  ö is Compose + " + o
  ß is Compose + s + s

  € is Compose + = + e

In Emacs, the easiest way to input Unicode directly is to set read-quoted-char-radix to 16 in your .emacs. Then use C-q (typically bound to quoted-insert) to input a glyph directly via hex code point.

Thinkin' the same thing. Actually, it is very feasible and affordable for a low-range city car. The major factors are the cost of batteries, and range anxiety. You can do conversions with in some cheap lead-acid batteries generally for a total build cost <$3-4k. Cons: limited recharge cycle, weight, not practical for >30km range (~18mi).

Lithium batteries are the best (either LiOn or LiFePo), super expensive though. Tesla Model S 85kWh uses 7104 3.1mAh Panasonic 18650 cells. They probably have a special purchase agreement ala Apple with Samsung NAND. If you wanted to buy enough for 100mi range I crudely estimated the retail cost at $15167.58 (vendor Orbtronic).

The problem is that "Telco" hasn't existed (at least in the USA) since divestiture of Bell System. Tariffed services include access to the PSTN as in terms of trunk lines (esp. PRIs), which allow end users to control call appearance including specification of the originating Directory Number (DN) that is passed in the SS7 call setup message (ISUP). It is even easier with SIP trunks.

This is a problem similar to DNS spoofing. Often a large organisation will have an 8xx number (toll-free) which they wish to appear for CLID on all outgoing calls from every line, every office.

How do you validate whether the toll-free (or whatever) CLID number passed is correspondent with the actual number of the OUTWATS trunk (or SIP trunk) used by a given caller? Trunk lines need not necessarily have a DN assigned to them if they are purely for outgoing service.

You would need to setup facilities to "sign" each originating call with a cryptographic certificate assigned to the owner of the number passed and then equipment on each terminating set to validate this.

This is an extremely non-trivial proposition.

Cablecos that have a captive market raise their rates as much as their consumer base will bear. As soon as carriers can find a way to monetize something, they won't stop. Value-added services, fees, rate-hikes. It's rent-seeking behavior, like the railroad tycoons. Cable & telco greed is practically a law of physics. That's why we have regulated service for electricity and telephone, because we recognize how essential it is to modern life. And it should be no different for internet.

It's not so much about the last mile anymore. Since most customers want bundled voice/data/video, it's about linear video channels and that means content. The big players are always going to have more clout in negotiating the best rates for their bundled channels because they have the most subs (subscribers). Even if FCC mandated unbundling of the CableCos' HFC plant and the Telcos' FTTx plant, no one will be able to compete with the big boys on content.

Also, alot of these plants were not designed for interoperability with other vendors' equipment and troubleshooting would be difficult to impossible. It's no longer as simple as a 2-wire local loop (twisted pair) that you can break out from a split bank to your own frame and DSLAM. The technologies share the same physical media -- think bus topology like a token ring. One faulty ONT in a B-PON or G-PON network can impact service for ~30 customers.

What the FCC could do is mandate the reselling of data services like UNE-P with POTS, and the reseller (e.g. Netflix) could then bundle their own pure VoD product for video over the carrier's data platform So, deregulation (unbundling - platform) is one option.

Otherwise, there would have to be a mandated and fair policy for exchange data between ISPs either at free or at tariffed rates across the board, just like voice trunks.

Data is the new voice and the FCC needs to weigh in and start (de)/regulating or this is what the internet is going to look like 10 years from now.

Exactly. MSO (Cable) & Telco ISPs that offer video products are already prioritizing their own VoD (Video-on-Demand) offerings over data to ensure QoS (quality of service). Whether by over-provisioning the virtual circuits to their customers, not amortizing the data consumed against a hard or soft cap limit, or directly peering the VoD servers with the edge routers, ISP video gets the priority because that is where the big profits are. There is no value proposition for BIG ISP to provide free peering with their competition.
