It’s pretty scary stuff. I just spent 2022 grinding without sleep and severe depression due to accidental abuse of this stuff. My doctor did not educate me well and I’ve never felt better cutting it off cold turkey.
I exclusively self host vault warden behind a VPN and firewall with a custom domain. Changes are automatically managed and deployed through GitHub CI/CD.
I have wireguard VPN on all my devices tunneled into my server. I also self-host the VPN since vaultwarden runs on a local Docker intranet.
If people are interested, I was going to write a step by step blog.
Less technical, but I also get yubikey and duo 2factor push auth out of the box with Vaultwarden! (Open source rust implementation of Bitwarden)
I left Facebook 8 years ago, but have been in and out of sites like Reddit, HN, trash news and the like. I’ve gotten rid of my smartphone on and off a few times.
I’m 27 and as I get older, I become much more cognizant of how I both spend my time and sources of my knowledge consumption.
I’ve since deleted Reddit and primarily only keep in contact with people via iMessage/post cards/phone calls or in person events.
I’ve been actively monitoring energy levels through the weeks and realize that limiting my screen time and sedentary time to 4 hours a day is key. A simple hack I’ve learned to build the habit is:
- Don’t have phone in bedroom at night
- Read the same time every day for 30 minutes minimum
- take pleasure in boredom
- exercise even if you don’t want to (and your body isn’t exhausted from excess exercise). I like to oscillate between activities like surfing, yoga, running and walking to keep exercise always interesting.
If you need some research backed knowledge on easing on the dopamine, check out Dopamine Nation and Deep Work. Both solid books that can help shift your perspective. For people needing more energy in their life, I highly recommend Why We Sleep
Is it public? If you host a high traffic site from residential ISP connection, your account could get banned.
Regardless,
I would host an NGINX proxy in front of some docker containers. It’s the easiest and classic way to front apps with custom domains very very easily. Traefik is also very nice and fast (Go based) reverse proxy.
If it’s purely for personal use, then check Cloudflared to tunnel into your network and access it like a VPN.
Again, if it’s Public be weary of DDOS attacks, port scans, etc. Personally I wouldn’t self-host a public web app from my house and instead would use a 4/mo VPS from Hetzner
Coding is everywhere. Lean into your business skills and get a business analytics job. I feel with a good portfolio and story with a lot of studying, that would be a good path.
I believe the question is around layoffs being beneficial or detrimental. For example, let’s say you have a 6 person company and layoffs affect 50% of the staff. Now you’re down to 3 people. Is that beneficial or detrimental? Now 3 people need to do the work for 6.
At a large scale, maybe some companies over hire, so it cuts the waste and the amortized results are better financially. However, for others (Twitter?, tbd) when you mass cut a ton of talent, innovation dwindles, morale sinks, time to learn and pick up old projects increases. Layoffs can hurt companies financially much harder, but it may not be immediate. It may be the demise of the company in 1-3 years due to all the other complex variables at play
Nice review of Thorstens book. I read your book when I graduated college around 2018 and was unfulfilled at work. It was a lot of fun and I distinctly remember sitting in a coffee shop for hours reading through it and debugging my code.
Unsurprisingly my family asked what I wanted for Christmas and I put both your book and Thorstens on my list to reread .
