It's interesting how the refrain is usually "the power of the free market", "let the free market decide" yada yada. However, as soon as workers decide to express their power by using their free market labor to push companies to do the right thing. All of a sudden people come out with the authoritarian dribble written above, and the "take politics out of the workplace" (which is literally a political position).

Worry less about the profits of a monopoly and more about the will of the people to do the right thing in lieu of some ostensible catastrophic profit loss that's more than likely not going to happen.

Also, this whole "programmers are going to turn into illegal rogue agents and sabotage amazon customers" is beyond absurd reactionary hysterics.

The fact is that, while the mainstream media pays attention to the far right outcry of censorship and demonetization, the left alternative media is also censored and demonetized on YouTube.

YouTube is actively promoting the content of mainstream corporate sources that are inoffensive to advertisers with no say from its creators, it’s employees or its viewers/subscribers. And this is truly the fundamental problem.

YouTube has zero accountability to anyone accept its advertisers, it’s major shareholders which there are few, and its board which there are few. YouTube being the only game in town, makes it impossible for the free market to allow you to move your eyeballs to another video platform.

The fact is we need regulation and democratic oversight over YouTube as it is demonstrably a public good and a monopoly.

I find this advice odd. I have to imagine that part of wanting to be a writer is also being recognized for your creative work as an individual.

Telling someone to write documentation that ultimately will be attributed to the company and only seen by the employees or technical end users is a bizarrely tone deaf piece of advice for a someone who wants to be a writer.

The final paragraph is a more human and less corporate drone piece of advice.

Durant literally agreed to having it dismantled and it was buried by Dakota Elders.

It’s problematic, because it’s reinforcing a particular worldview and ideology and it’s giving the reader a vocabulary that continues the status quo of American supremacy and American hegemony.

If your small contribution is allowing you to delude yourself into think that it’s enough to ever have a cumulative effect for the positive, then that contribution is still an engine for the negative outcomes of the status quo.

Having been reading hacker news since 2009, I’m really tired of these unevidenced clickbait listicles on some persons anecdote.

There is no evidence presidented whatsoever in this article. It also seems that this person hasn’t worked with a numbered and diverse enough set of clients to even warrant listening to him as a practioner.

He’s peddling tired DDD tropes amongst a spattering of meandering well worn blog posty unsciencey ideas he’s read throughout the years.

The implication of “Consumers are far better now than they were” is that they are better, because of the App Store. This is false, completely illogical, and a straw man argument (as no one suggest users of tech have it worse in 2019 then 2005). Consumers are better off now, because technology has gotten better, not because App Stores have made things better. App Stores have actively caused harm to the consumers through lock in and through a compression of imagination amongst end users of how much better things could be.

You’re also factually incorrect about “a small elite had access to the internet”. That may have been true in the 80s, but by 2000 usage was at 50% and climbed to 75% by 2010. I mean the dot com boom was predicated on wide user adoption, so I don’t even know why you would even think that stat made inuitive sense.

This whole discussion is missing the forest through the trees.

People are fighting over the scraps being dolled out by some out of touch billionaire, who ultimately wants to increase her network and drive up her labor supply to increase her profits.

This program will effect 40 people (who cares about their gender) out of many 100s of millions of Americans. 40 people who are in a socioeconomic class to know about this program and to have had the education to articulate themselves well enough to be admitted.

If this woman actually wanted to help women she’d be striving and advocating for public policy that actually looks to provide universal programs across socioeconomic backgrounds (which would include white men and women and also poor black people).

But she’s not, she believes she should have unilateral control over who gets to be successful through access to programming training, because she’s fundamentally anti democratic.

The world is not divided by efforts like this. There’s an extremely complicated economic/political/cultural circumstance that is dividing the world. To reduce current cultural divides to reactionary simple binaries is beyond silly.

No one is opposed to white men succeeding, it’s just not interesting because that’s the status quo. While the interests of all working class people need to be addressed (including white men), getting angry over some random millionaire rolling out cash to 40 girls who are also most likely going to be of a socioeconomic status that is at least smart, articulate and aware enough of our bubble is absurd.

The real issue is we have to fight over the crumbs of some out of touch millionaire rolling out private grants like we’re children so that we can ultimately provide cheaper labor for people like her to make herself more wealthy and continue the cycle.

Are you against the government’s laws barring businesses from excluding black customers?

Do you think bussing companies should be able to express their freedom of speech by having segregated seating?

Google’s motto is don’t be evil, yet they have been implicated in many “evil” business dealings (how about the Silicon Valley salary fixing that directly and materially affects a lot of users of this board).

A common refrain from the alt right is that they don’t hate non whites, they just want them to have their own ethno state away from whites (which obviously means forcibly removing undesirables, but of course they don’t say this).

Companies and organizations say a lot of things, you need to look at what they are actually saying, not the PR spin they vomit up for rubes to fall for.

Start thinking beyond propaganda.

Another vacuous gray-eige individual with absolutely nothing to say, who feels they need to say something, because a blog somewhere said they should.

Rather then turning inward to optimize whatever lame version of happiness some Netflix documentary, self-help book or YouTube video said you should (ultimately all in the pursuit of 1 more extra meaningless dollar), you should instead read some actual literature, philosophy, economics, or political theory and actually get involved in helping your community now that you have the means.

Aping an ascetic lifestyle while you have a huge coffer and continue to pursue wealth accumulation is lame, unoriginal and bad for your mental health and the health of your greater community.

Stop trying to indoctrinate yourself with nonsense to justify your unhappiness and shallow lifestyle and instead seek actual self improvement through engaging with real and challenging intellectual material.

This idea that “people think billionaires are evil” is such a toxic straw man. “People” think that no one person is generating a billion dollars in value, and while being heavily rewarded for your decisions is fine, it’s not fine when it is at the expense of our politics (lobbying/super pacs), small businesses/innovation (Bill Gates tried to DESTROY open source, and many smaller companies) and providing for our people fairly.

It’s also ridiculous that Bill Gates gets to decide when and where we donate our money and to what causes. These billionaires need to be taxed and their money needs to be democratically distributed.

Also, look at every major players wiki... they all call themselves philanthropists, it’s a grift.

The 4.7 trillion dollars is in reference to "quantitive easing" (which is a euphemism for print money and give it to banks).

The problem was 100% bad debts. It is absolutely false to suggest that it wasn't. Banks were practicing predatory lending on the poor/working class, burdening them with debts that had 3 year low interest rates that would spike after the third year. This is a strategy admitted to by Greenspan.

We absolutely do know that debt forgiveness works, and that it was absolutely NOT the right decision to give the money to the bankers. The German Miracle being the prime 20th century example. But you can also look at the Jubilee year and debt forgiveness between monarchy changes through antiquity.

You are making the mistake of taking the propaganda sold to you by corporate news media as fact, when it is in fact a constructed reality by the banks and their political puppets.

Being pro democrat is not being left at all. It’s being center right. The left since Carter has pushed forth far right neoliberal economic policy. Bill Clinton is universally known for his right wing policy. Obama literally bailed out the banks rather then the people with mortgages. Obama could have easily bought up the bad debts from the bank at a discount and allowed people to restructure their mortgages with 4.7 trillion dollars. Instead he gave it to the banks, allowed everyone to lose their house and be bought up by predators like Blackstone Realty.

We (the USA) have an economy based around taxing the 99% and cutting societal benefits, not limited to just infrastructure. Wall Street doesn't see profits to be made by funding large public sector interstate projects, and they (along with corporate monopolies in tech and pharma, big oil, insurance and real estate) choose our policy and forego anything that would help stimulate production outside of debt collection/rent collection/patent trolling and stock inflation via buy backs.

The fact is these sectors don't want to stimulate economic growth, they want to suppress wages, suppress the growth of future competitors and continue collecting massive amounts of unearned income via debt/rents/patent trolling/etc...

You are putting forth the logical fallacy of "no true scotsman", ie no TRUE CS person dislikes or doesn't understand regex.

You are are also straw-manning her tweet, by suggesting that she is unable to grok the basics of regex, when in fact, she actually seems to have stated that it's the worst and she hates it, not that she doesn't understand it.

From a "good for business" perspective, you also seem like you might be an overall drain on your team, as you elevate puzzle-fun and brevity over understanding your audience, ie that other people on your team don't know regex (or "refuse to learn it") and that you have to scale back your regex usage.

I also wouldn't say that I use my CS chops (which I will define as my ability to discern algorithms and design patterns out of bits of code that I write), but rather my ability to put up with the tedium of sitting in a repl and slowly figure out how to write the arcane incantation necessary in as few esoteric characters as possible to perfectly search out the text I want.

Also, it's hard for me to understand how you are writing code with regex that you have to tear our, because your coworkers don't understand it. Whenever I write regex, I hide them behind function calls that are easy to grok:
