Shared space doesn't really work except for places with very little traffic, and there only if the streets are small enough to make driving difficult and unpleasant. The Dutch model of providing safe, separated spaces for cycling and walking is a proven success.
Unless the oceans had a low rate of return, then you would kill all the fish as quickly as possible and invest the proceeds in higher-returning assets.
I strongly considered moving to the Netherlands because it's so much better for kids than America, but I decided it was better to be near family, and I worried that my stress in moving would be bad for the kids. I am not sure I made the right decision.
None of this early academic education is necessary. In Finland, which consistently has top scores in reading and math, kids don't start school until they're seven, and at that point they're only expected to be able to turn text rightside up.
(And before anybody jumps to the "homogenous society" explanation, Finland used to have mediocre schools before they put a lot of effort and money into them in the 70s and 80s.)
It sounds impossible but it actually happened - just acknowledging the stress I was under made the pain go away (it's not like you have to solve anything). I think it only took about four days. The crazy thing is it was actually visible. The throbbing swollen veins in my forearms receded. I was receptive to the idea because the pain was the worst the summer my dad was dying in a hospice and I wasn't working at all.
The bummer is there's no way to know if it's stress or not, but it doesn't hurt to give it a try.
