I think there is an analog here to the great man theory vs zeitgeist. Maybe this tech was underwhelming and its massive impact was due to fortuitous timing. So you weren’t wrong about the tech just how it would mix with the spirit of the moment.
The energy drain of software development is something I struggle with. I’ve worked as a painter and can relate to wrapping things up for the day and coming home physically exhausted but with energy remaining. Especially with Covid ‘work from anywhere all the time’ it’s very difficult to find a balance as a software slinger.
I am not going to reply to this because it’s a frustratingly crass response that lives up to the stereotypes of engineers. Is it that hard to believe that even in legitimate police interventions they are much more likely to use deadly force with a black person? “Black men are about 2.5 times more likely to be killed by police over the life course than are white men.” https://www.pnas.org/content/116/34/16793
It was not campaign finance laws that’s incorrect. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Impeachment_of_Donald_Trump?wp... Charges were abuse of power and obstruction of investigation. That Democrats were itching to impeach him doesn’t change the reality that he abused his office to advance his own political interests.
Your own reference proves it’s anything but fake news. That link states right off the bat that banning travel was virtually useless. He’s on record with Bob Woodward talking about how he knew the virus is serious but he wanted to avoid ‘panic’. If Trump spent a fraction of the energy he’s devoting to without any proof undermining our voting he would have been re-elected free and clear.
I’ve seen the impeachment described as illegitimate somehow. It was political sure, no doubt about it. But he tried to use his office to coerce a foreign government to take down his political opponent. That should be a fireable offense. He only escaped it because of purely political defense.
Attractive is a stretch https://apps.newyorkfed.org/markets/autorates/SOFR, granted rates are historically low but today a bank will earn $25 overnight for every billion lent out. Not really a cash cow. Maybe that’s why there is finally some progress.
The real value of the currency is supposed to (at least theoretically) be hurt by this. Printing money to solve problems either leads to hyperinflation in the extreme, a deflationary trap that Japan has been in or some new thing we are creating. Maybe because the whole world is doing it all at once it’ll be ok?
There is someone more informed to comment on this but the reason is the Fed. They are buying corporate debt. That’s a pretty drastic thing to be doing. This recent commentary by the Fed chairman describes the scene, the money tap is wide open. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2020-04-29/powell-vo...
Here is an interesting use https://www.lexifi.com/instrumentbox/. Algebraic description of financial contracts that then gives all sorts of common features you want to analyze them ‘for free’.
Spot on. Too many comments are see-sawing on details of parameters and trade offs but just talk to a doctor in NYC, they are out of room in ICUs and terrified about triaging that will start taking place.
I’d love to re-read that ancient white paper called ‘Bloomberg in a nutshell’ if anyone has it. It explains the server side architecture which is pretty interesting and terrifying as you said.
