There are several indications in your question that you are crazy.
If you are a C++ pro, why step down to web devel?
You must be crazy.
Or a liar.
But if you are established pro in C-whatever. Why. step. down. to. script. kiddy.?
You are crazy.
Well, you asked. I would say, just develop an app in RoR. Give yourself a short timeframe, two months say, and develop a tiny app in RoR or Django. See how it feels.
Do you know that iOS is C based? Objective-C, yeah, but still C.
Do you know that many web apps get re-written in low-level ( C for instance) for performance reasons?
Moore's Law will ensure the cycle will come back. When a smartphonesque device can robustly house your private cloud. At that stage the brick and mortar warehouses will have to offer other solutions than just enabling cloud services.
Joomla and Drupal think of it like Python and Ruby, in the sense of: the same thing but fundamentally absolutely different. I would say Drupal is better. But it doesn't really matter, either is fine and will get the job done.
If the site is not very big, consider Wordpress. For one reason: the community and with that mainly the pulgins available. For example there are WP plugins that do the whole conversion for mobile for you or do SEO for you. It really depends on what the site should do. But Wordpress can be easily the best solution.
Now, all that is moot, to a level, because all these CMS have nice importerts/exporters, so you cannot really make a big mistake that will sink everything.
If however, the site in question is bigger a site than just "a website", consider Typo3. It's a beast. It's cool. It may not worth the effort for a small shop, but if the site has enough size, try Typo3. Beast!
> and only noticed by the third that has a feel for it.
Everybody feels something. It's just that most people don't realize what it is what they are feeling. But subconsciously they feel a difference. And that diference may (or may not) influence the buying decision.
The difference? YouTube didn't loose anything. Facebook looses it's iconic brand: the white on blue 'like', that is just positive and teints the whole FB brand positively.
Oh, and people would use those things 'correctly', it's just too embarrassing sometimes. A simple 'like' is much more diplomatic.
I think that one founder had an array of reasons to leave China. This was not the only result of said array of reasons, which infuriated another founder. Regulations were met. Now one founder wants to undo unwelcomed results. It is his doing and what other founders and shareholders think gets circumvented through elegant solution implementation. Be evil by appearing good.
How is your "nature usage" going? What I mean is how often are you outside? I mean in the woods, not the city. At the beach, you know, nature.
The stimulation our brains get by beeing in nature is very important for us.
When you are outside and all the little, tiny millions of natural information tidbits that are coming from everywhere, they are important for our mental health in general. Outside, look at the waves, at the leafs of trees in the wind, bugs humming around and everything. Those pattern are important.
In the confines of our cities, which give us solace on other levels, and the simplistic abstractions of our GUIs, which we love, these natural stimulations are lacking.
May I suggest to you to go outside, hiking, kayaking, paragliding, stuff like that, regularly and often?
Take a walk to the nearest park every day, look at the trees for a while.
Do something physical - start a martial arts or so.
On a personal note: I hate it too. Working out is so dump, your brain is empty while doing so and that sucks. I know. I am not a "jock" by any means. I am bored by it, I understand.
But. From my point of view tere is a clear spiral down that beins with not having enough natural stimulation going on. For decades now, I suppose?
I also want to second the other poster: it is good that you reached out.
The workers were bullshitted by CBM and didn't get it:
"When I asked WeWork for more money, they told me to talk to CBM, he said. When I asked CBM for more money, CBM said WeWork had to approve the raise. It was frustrating."
The underlying problem, that both companies in question are under pressure of financial forces, didn't get mentioned.
Be glad you had that one. The other BASICs of those times where much more limited! GW was a little bit of awesome in it's own way. Oh, and POKE and PEEK.
A good (content) marketer would produce content that he thinks his target audience would like.
There is no difference as to why a submitter does submit: the variable we ar talking here is the ability to estimate what is liked by the HN community.
This ability is not necessarily afflicted by the motivation behind producing and submitting content.
The original PG essays are a content marketing program for Y-combinator, for instance, but nobody in the marketed to crowd resents them. Au contraire, PG is hailed as a her (tm) and there is zero wrong with any of that, IMHO.
Good copy takes into account who it addresses. Obviously someone who nows how to estimate what "firewall" means in an IT context will have a rough idea as to what a Dropbox is.
Can you elaborate on that? I honestly can't see it.
