I read somewhere the author of Starship Troopers, Robert Heinlein, wrote that when he realized he couldn't cry he took steps to learn to do so. I am a man still learning.
In my self help group for recovery from abuse even some of the women could not cry. We thought this was from bigger people saying, "If you don't stop crying I'll give you something to cry about" and also we thought they were bloody liars, unable to admit to us that our crying upset them and they didn't want to feel (just as they took substances to avoid feeling)
I am of the generation that would say, "The redcoats are coming!" To us coffee seemed more manly, as in, what Earnest Hemingway would drink. Or soldiers.
Imagine my amusement in the 1970's when I was stationed with the British army and our mess halls had big vats of tea.
As regards rural areas (like where my sister lives) not having fast internet, this is why my blog has no graphics, photographs or other doodads: they take too long to download over phone lines.
Yes, Mexico is in NAFTA. The agreement needed much public consultation when first proposed, partly because Canadians wanted legal assurances they would be allowed (by the U.S.) to keep their culture, but when Mexico was added it pretty much few under the radar.
I think other nations have been added as a "done deal" without advance public notice.
In Canada, when I needed over a $1,000 to pay my dentist I happily carried a $1,000 note.
Of course, I had to order it from my bank and wait until the next time they had money being shipped in. It's a happy memory that I can never repeat, because the $1,000 bills are no longer made here: (or in the U.S.)Although we haven't declared war on drugs we do have concerns about crime.
If you mean the article, then I disagree, for I read him as using this person, candidate, and even the gender neutral "them" in the singular.
As for "guy," the word is like nation and nationalist: it must be read in context: nation can mean Kurds and Quebec, or Iraq and Canada. Yes, if you want Quebec to separate then you are a nationalist, and if you want Canada to stay whole then you are a nationalist.
In talking to two women I can mention a gorgeous guy in my classroom and then ask, "Are you guys going to the concert?"
I live in Canada and I read the newspapers almost daily. Canadian school shootings are rare, rare enough to be reported coast to coast when they happen. I know of only one this year, in the north.
The US truly has more than 10X the number of shootings, as documented in the movie Bowling for Columbine. (and other places) This difference is due to a different gun culture. (I would guess the rape cultures are equal)
It would have to involve pressing two buttons. Putting 9-1-1 on a single button over here has resulted in a lot of false calls, sometimes from simply sitting on a coat containing a phone.
