However, couldn't you say this about about a plethora of things?
I got kids/built a commerical building/wrote a book/made a youtube clip/participated in official sport (records lasts forever whohoo!). All of these things will keep existing to some capacity when you die.
Pitching in implies that it is voluntary. Government funding by taxation is not.
Calling something childish is not an argument.
Being underfunded is no excuse, they could be efficient and get the most out of the money they take (by force, don't forget my friend). If they were, then you can argue we should fund them further.
I'm still eagerly awaiting your definition of well-functioning and an explanation for how the "rest of the world" fall under that definition.
It seems to be going in that direction, but I really hope MOOCs get integrated in traditional formal education. Options for proctored exams that lead to university credit and degrees would be a huge gamechanger.
