I don't use LinkedIn for much more than a way for people to get a quick bit of info about me when they google my name, thanks to how high linkedin profiles rise in search results.
I don't use it enough to care who I connect to. I don't do anything on there. Why is the author so worried about people seeing who his friends and parents are?

Yes, it's meant to be deleted.
Link is dead.
I think that people from totally different fields of work of my own, but whom I happen to know (a.k.a. family and friends) may, sometime, be useful to my career too. People change careers all the time, I may stay on my fiel but change company, or change the industry I act. These times a diverse network may be useful.
Quality may come from proximity, but also may come from diversity. I am prefering diversity right now.
