If you write proper English, the coding world is littered with misspellings:
* COLOR instead of COLOUR
* CENTER instead of CENTRE
* FLAVOR instead of FLAVOUR
* ---IZE instead of ---ISE
etc... etc..
I never gave REFERER a second thought, assuming it was just another illiterate American corruption of proper English.

Naming (public) things in software is hard because renaming them later will break other people's stuff... unless you're in the JS ecosystem where breaking API changes happen on a regular basis and is basically expected at this point sigh
