My guess would be that it is the body of information that google indexes and ranks that has skewed over time, and not that google is skewing the results.

It is also likely that google's ranking algorithms reflect the fact that sensational articles about health concerns get more links than serious scientific articles.

Edit: At one point the author does say "Google may not be driving the trend here so much as reflecting it."
