The 7.8% line is to be taken with a grain of salt though. If you decide to invest all the theoretical college money and work without said education you'll (hopefully) still earn >0$.
It would have also helped if the article said what degree/how long it takes (BA, MA) and what the investment cost for the degree actually is (provide median or something). A typical BA takes 2 years and is in the ballpark of 50k$ on the lowish end (I heard that as a low end average for in-state public schools). Had I invested that fictional amount at 7.8% since universities are "free" here I'd have about 225k...yay

I'd add the observation that it is way easier to go to college and get a formal education in science, math, or engineering, and pursue an ongoing adhoc self-directed education in the arts and humanities in your remaining decades of life, than the other way around.

I disagree slightly. Mostly because you can find dozens of commentaries and critical analyses of great works of fiction to complement your reading. These are essentially transmitting the same info a knowledgeable teacher/group of classmates would. The resources for math and science are also vast, but often require access to specialized laborites/equipment at the upper levels.
Uhh... no they're not "essentially the same." The value of being in the same room as knowledgeable people is interacting with them. If there's something that is unclear or that you want to delve into, you have an interactive way to do so.

My comment was not a guide on how you can "rule the world", in your words. I was simply pointing out that those at the very top are "self-learning".

It doesn't mean that there are no fields with rigid credential requirements. It does mean that no formal body controls education, only schooling and credentials.

I can google questions, I can read discussions that take place between other people, I can chime in, I can be replied to.
I would probably find it more useful to be able to read all the TOP QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS from all the Roman History 101 discussions around the world, than just whatever came up in my class. Being able to sort by global best as opposed to local loudest sounds very useful.

That's a null argument. It cuts both ways equally, and therefore can not distinguish between the two.
In these days when STEM is so promoted, I think sometimes there is too much tendency to dismiss the arts and humanities as complete lightweight fluff compared to STEM. Perhaps there are some subjects which fall in this category. But I know, for instance, with music theory and composition, the heavy stuff can get fairly complicated and technical very fast. Certainly few people would be dismissive of the technical training required to be a virtuoso player.
I think this is the same for other "liberal arts" subjects too. Take linguistics -- from what I know about some of the linguistics concepts that pioneer translation software, speech synthesis, natural language processing, etc., linguistics is hardly "fluff" and requires some years of deep study to be an expert at.

In many subjects, I think extremely gifted autodidacts are pretty rare. No matter whether its the STEM subjects or the arts or anything else, I think most people benefit from an environment where like minded peers can bounce ideas off of each other.

Heck, depending on what you are doing, you probably even risk a run in with "the law" these days from tinkering in certain sectors of hobbies like home chemistry or home biology.
To me, that's pretty much the barrier for non-college STEM in a nutshell.

I'm not disagreeing with your general point -- from my observations at a tech-focused school, many STEM folks write off the arts pretty hard -- but I think your examples are poorly chosen. Most folks are aware or have at least heard that, at a deep level, music has a lot of mathematics. Additionally, linguistics emerged specifically as a scientific study of language: much closer to STEM than other humanities.

But if you just want to go to college as a social signal, and a ticket to 4 years of parties, then arts and humanities will offer you a place of comfort. Not every professor for every class at every university; but at pretty much any university you can find some kind of lazy path through the arts/humanities departments.

If they can't tell the difference between a concerto and a sonata, then the counselors can take them out of music theory, and put them in "post-modern ethno musical studies".

From my experiences, the rest of the STEM field doesn't take the social science parts (psychology, athropology, economics, political science) very seriously or even consider them STEM on a colloquial level (even if "officially" they are).

Many artists peak in their early thirties after about a decade of constant practice and work. There are many hormonal and social changes that occur after that point which make creative paths more difficult. Certainly not impossible but I certainly wouldn't consider doing those later as simple as it sounds on paper based upon financial means.
I studied Japanese in school and I think it would have been extremely difficult to learn on my own. So... I'd say it depends.
Given the thousands of majors, there are certainly exceptions on both sides. But I'm still comfortable with that assessment in general; "learning an entire language" is also one of the exceptions.

There's plenty of non-college ways of doing that, for way less money, since it's something that business people have to do routinely. Even if it means taking languages courses from the local community college on the side... Who cares what other people do? What are you going to do? Are you incapable of leveraging from an intro course in Japanese into anything you want? If so, why do you think you're going to do any better in a formal environment either? It's not like they crack open your head and pour pure distilled knowledge into it while you passively sit back and just take it in.

The point of view you speak for -- that education is an end in itself -- is a privilege of the rich and reflects their historical attitudes towards education. Back in the day, liberal education was for the children of the rich, and it gave them culture, polish, and perspective that was hard to attain elsewhere. Those are the non-economic benefits of studying the humanities. They're certainly real, and valuable. I'd definitely prefer that people in positions of power and authority have studied philosophy, history, and literature.
However, to argue that a young person of modest means should study the humanities is just cruel. If your family and connections aren't going to set you up as a company vice president or send you to the legislature, your job prospects are dismal.

Look, I'm not going to get into a pissing match about what discipline is harder. The point is that learning Japanese at a university is not an experience that could be easily duplicated somewhere else and that there are probably other "soft" disciplines of which the same could be said.
Learning Japanese is way easier if you just go to the country and live there. I'll guarantee if you go with the same amount of money invested in college you'll learn the language faster.
Part of my studies took place in Japan; being there certainly helps but it's not the same thing (and besides that, how do you get to Japan? It's almost impossible to get a long-term visa unless you are either a student or have a degree)
Once you embark on the quest to learn japanese, you begin to look for other avenues to hone in on those skills -- whether its finding other people who speak it, or in some people's cases, play on japanese gaming servers, or skyping/hangouts and converse with japanese people in full immersion. After that you want to start reading more literature, so you do what anyone would do and search for japanese books on Amazon. After a while amazon starts offering you remarkable suggestions based on what the majority of japanese speaking people are reading.

My case it was german. I was so fascinated with the german language, and germany as a whole, in part I must sadly admit because I was such an avid fan of WW2 history. I actually tried to go the traditional route, and I hated it. I noticed one time some germans playing counterstrike and other MMORPG's I was playing. I got to know them better, in part because of their extreme delight in my ability to say a few things in german. Then it turned into ventrilo/teamspeak sessions, which then turned into me wanting to read actual german books, then it went on to learning about Otto Von Bismarck, German Reunification, the East/West cultural divide, watching foreign german films such as Der Unterfall, Das Leben der Anderen, Good Bye, Lenin!, effects German engineering such as Gottlieb Wilhelm Daimler and von Braun, which led me down the path of looking into german businesses, especially the ones that are here in my own home state (which are many), it was so much fun!
edit: I realize you qualified it with 'business' people, implying they won't see the value of learning the other things, but since business people is a large group (of which I myself can be considered a part of) I imagine there are others like me.

Maybe they would, but I've attended Japanese courses intended mostly for businesspeople before college and they were almost universally focused on conversational Japanese -- which is fine but nothing like studying Japanese literature with a professor who is an expert in it. We're getting away from the claim that it would be "easy" to learn this on your own, to be sure.
I've been learning some Korean in my spare time and I feel pretty confident in my assessment that being in a college course would both be easier and see me make more progress more quickly.

I see. I think maybe the difference is enthusiasm? If someone is going into it thinking "It would be really helpful for my work or business to learn Japanese" versus "Japanese is cool. I would really like to immerse myself in this language and learn how to talk to Japanese people" would merit different results. The business-focused person would be more inclined to trod those traditional routes of instructorship and classes, etc, but being a student of languages myself, as well as knowing 3 of them (sorry if this sounds like I am trying to argue by authority), I can say the latter is the only way you really ever learn a language.
My good friend has a PhD in Chinese, (yes that is actually a thing), and he attests to the fact that he didn't grok the language until his travels and studies there, being immersed.
Now typing this I realize we may be debating across each other, because even if you believe you can learn on your own better, or having structured courses is better, the real answer is none of it sticks unless you fully immerse yourself in it, self-taught or not.

I'm hesitant to give too much detail for fear of outing myself here, but: In a few, yes (or at least at one point; I'm sure I've dipped in fluency). In others I am less accomplished. I think traditional education has been very successful for me. I'm not going to argue that it's not possible to graduate with a Japanese degree without being able to carry on a conversation -- it is -- but I think a university program is still a very effective way of not only attaining fluency in the language but also some level of erudition as far literature/culture/etc.

I studied Japanese in school too. Being young and having free time helped a lot, as did having a Japanese roommate who invited all his buddies over to drink in my room until 3am every weekend.
Nonetheless, I have achieved a level of fluency and especially literacy in Mandarin that puts my Japanese of that time to shame and I have no formal credential backing it up.

I think you can self learn Japanese by moving to Japan without much formal education ed: in Japanese. This assumes having a background where you could move to Japan. But, over a 20 year time scale it's not unreasonable.

Language seems like a complicating factor here. It's difficult (especially in non-Latinate cases) to learn self-directed, and people who are fluent and willing to work in the field can actually do quite well traveling and translating for businesses and government agencies.

But it does depend. If the above poster was taking Japanese as his sole Major it is probably not worth it. If he/she is taking it as an addendum to say a Business degree then it is very much worth it.
I guess it depends how you define "worth it." I have a satisfying career but it has nothing to do with my ability in Japanese.

Less well known languages like Japanese tend to have higher returns on investment than common ones like Spanish. IIRC Spanish has a return on investment of about 3%.
In my experience the Japanese translation market was very crowded and didn't pay well so my first plan went out the window.
I forget if it was Planet Money or Freakonomics, but there was a podcast about the ROI of learning a foreign language and according to the research they cited the only foreign language worth learning from a pure ROI perspective was English.

Some universities also have specialized and very expensive labs with robotics and virtual reality rooms.
The humanities graduate wanting to "reinvent" himself/herself as a "electrical engineer" can buy the same college books and watch hours of youtube videos about circuits but the lab work is really hard to replicate. I'd wager you have a better shot of getting a paying "art career" by starting with a STEM degree and trying to move to that field than getting an art degree. There's a reason we have a societal meme about art majors working as baristas and waiters -- it's more or less a degree that does not lead to a relevant career.

I actually do know what I'm talking about here, and it is true. The art industry has way more supply than demand. This is why art schools can still charge what, purely by the numbers, looks like a bad deal. Some people really want to work in art, and even if you end up "only" managing a gallery, you have to have the right credentials.
If you are a genius artist that happens to get lucky, sure. But if you want to have an actual art career, it will be tough without art school

While often it just measures that people that are smarter and motivated (because they can and want to go to college) do better financially than the one less smart and less motivated.
I wish I could find a study of similarly smart and motivated people who decided themselves to go or not to college. As a choice. And see what the difference in earnings over life would be. That would measure the added value of college education.

I predict that in the future college will become so expensive that students of all abilities will rely more on online certificates to measure their ability and training. Employers will more slowly accept these credentials. If enough smart people don't go to college, the signaling ability of college will be broken and then the higher education market will collapse or radically reform itself.
I think we're already seeing that in tech. Not just the coding schools which are still pretty young but online training such as Lynda and Pluralsight.
It will take much longer - if ever - for something like that to happen in law, medicine, and engineering but it's feasible. Remember, licensing and accreditation are still relatively new concepts..

I consider myself smart and motivated, I was in sales for about 8 years by choice rather than going to college. I was good at it, but 2 years of college(a double major), and a few years in industry and I'm now making 5x what I did. It's an anecdote sure, but I haven't changed at all, my degree simply qualified me for a different industry.

Union payscale for 40 hrs no overtime is about twice median income where I live, I make about twice that programming, 2x median sounds bad compared to 4x median, but compared to joe6pack, twice median isn't that bad of a life, and there's something to be said for leaving work at work when you go home at the end of the day.
I have a cousin in law who's a stationary diesel mechanic with decades of experience and certifications, he's running about 8x median income, but that includes overtime and oncall and unlike fields like programming, diesel mechanic work is a profession that values decades of experience so a noob grad is not going to get that kind of pay. Pay might vary based on local values of supply and demand. Stationary diesels run your datacenter and hospital UPS, and corporations at least seem to have a blank checkbook for disaster recovery spending.

I find it disheartening that the only way it seems we can think about college anymore is a sort of vocational school where we train for careers.

It's an emulation of the noble classes of yore, who learned things they didn't need to know as a way of signaling that they could afford to do so because they didn't need to work. Most people are no better off 10-years down the line for having learned about what native Americans used to live in Virginia or what covalent bonds are.

Let me be clear, I was perhaps addressing the parent more literally than I should have, in the broad sense of cross-domain learning for the sake of learning.

I interpreted it not as 'knowing versus not knowing' but as 'knowing about Native Americans and covalent bonds' versus 'knowing whatever people would end up knowing if they didn't go to College'.

When it costs upwards of $100,000 to attend, you better be thinking of what you're getting for your money. Unfortunately in America it doesn't come free.
My oldest daughter is just entering high school and we are indeed thinking about maximizing the return on education investment. I went to school for computer science and while I have a very good and easy life, I regret not spending more time studying the humanities. I've told her about this hoping to provide another perspective than what she gets at school where they push STEM relentlessly.

Isn't that what general education is for? I majored in Computer Science, but I took classes on Japanese, Theater, Poly Sci, Criminal Justice, Communications, Literature, and probably a couple others I can't remember right now. In several of those subjects I took two or three classes.

I'm aware. But the typical college experience in the US doesn't really include the liberal arts.
What do you think about the IB program? My daughter is on a track that leads to IB in 11th grade and I'm not sure how I feel about that.
In my experience, it's excellent. I definitely found my IB classes a lot more intellectually challenging and invigorating than my AP classes. The curriculum is well-rounded and in-depth. Plus, the requirement of choosing only 4 HLs provides an automatic defense against excessive commitments.
I'm not sure how generalizable my experience is though. My AP classes were at a normal public high school while my IB classes were at an elite boarding school. I will say that the exams are definitely much better for the IB (they're much more detailed and require actual understanding rather than rote memorization).

Time demands. It sounds like the program is a lot of work and I don't think having school crowd out everything else is necessarily healthy.
I'm a slacker and I did fine in IB. She will have to work more than the average high school student (that is to say, more than basically zero) but it's completely possible to have other hobbies and activities.

I didn't take full advantage of what the university had to offer me. I was very focused on learning as much as I could about computer science, software development, and systems and I mostly neglected the humanities (although I did take economics and loved it).

Unless you're lucky enough to already have enough resources to spend both time and money attending a school without any expectation of return, it seems to be the natural conclusion to me. Without the incentive of higher paying jobs backing colleges, something tells me they would be quite a bit less successful in recruiting students.
Colleges are enthusiastic partners in positioning the concept that college is a path to a good career. They only seem to bring out complaints about using colleges as "vocational school" when people expect results.
It's not like university admissions offices are filled with people saying "Are you sure you want to come here? Don't do it for any hope of having a job in the future, this is a $n year exercise in pure reason and research."

That is a side effect of the cost. In-state public university costs are up 296% over the last 20 years[1]. It is no surprise that a family spending that much money, per child, will consider the return on that spending. It is far more than a typical car and more in the realm of buying a home.

Aside from the "it's expensive!" claim, I would argue that the vocational school view is increasingly driven by how large colleges behave. As access to professors declines in favor of TA/lecturer taught classes, and as the amount of red tape rises, the whole "pursuit of knowledge" claim grows slowly thinner.
It's not gone, obviously, and some places are better than others, but it seems to be getting scarcer. If your degree no longer offers a shot at the sublime beauty of understanding, I suppose it's time to start counting dollars.

Well, yes, it's one thing for businesses to prattle on about how colleges must be reformed to teach only things they think they need, but it's frustrating to see colleges start accepting it too.
To say anything more means to assign some meaning or value to life other than hedonic consumption, which nowadays is something people are often reluctant to do in a public forum.

I think we can all agree that there is a difference between earning 150k a year as a senior software engineer and as a director of the American Musical Heritage foundation. Some people could reasonably see those as very different outcomes, one job far more desirable than the other.

Think about being a data scientist who writes a lot of code, but has a tremendous amount of autonomy and freedom, who gets to initiate projects, direct his or her own work, make presentations, speak at conferences, and so forth. Now imagine being a senior crud bug fixer who checks JIRA every morning and works (under constant pressure to provide updates about whether we'll still meet the "deadline") to figure out why some payroll calculations are sometimes included twice in the pdf report but not the excel report. Say both jobs pay 150k.

This article is about statistics, not individuals. While it certainly shows trends, for any individual person, their ROI depends on what they do with their own lives. (And ROI might not even be their #1 goal.)
As for me, I got a degree in Fine Arts from a small liberal arts school, then become a coder. I have almost zero regret about that choice, 20+ years down the line. Actually, if I had to do it again, I am more likely to skip the coder part, not the college part. (20+ years behind a desk... I could probably find a better path.)

Do those ROI calculations include the cost of borrowing? I'd expect they don't - and if not, it means that most degrees are no longer worth it if you have to borrow a significant portion of the money.
With federal loans ranging between 6-8.5% (last I looked) it means that for the first 10-20 years, the government is the one capturing the gains from many people's college educations. There may well still be a positive ROI for some degrees but the loan picture means it comes on a much longer timeline, doesn't it?

Because this compares present day cost to all earners (not sure how they normalized for graduate degrees, etc.), there is a huge recency bias. I majored in humanities and minored in sciences/math about ten years ago. Even counting my piddly graduate stipend (again, in humanities) for several years, my return rate of return is over 20% (IRR). If my school had cost twice as much, as it does just ten years later, the rate of return would have been less than 10% as predicted.

While cronyism and nepotism are probably significant factors, beyond those I don't know if what your parents earn matters as much as it may be an indicator of your manners, knowledge of social customs, proper grammar, etc.. Perhaps those raised in wealthy homes tend to know better how to behave among wealthy people than those who come from poor backgrounds. All else being equal, those who comport themselves better are more likely to get ahead.
In the broad middle, I don't think there is much of a manners/customs/grammar distinction. Any well-brought up middle class child should be perfectly capable of interacting with all but the wealthiest nobility. Of course, there are a few upper-middle class snobs who will think less of you for your lack of oenological prowess or your off the peg suit, but such people are not a common direct influence on that many people.
There are other factors:
* One thing is simply understanding the opportunities available to you. The idea that "People like me don't (go to university | start companies | go for promotion beyond a certain level)" is quite harmful.
* It is not uncommon that people go into the same field as one of their parents, simply because of how big an influence they are on your life as a child. If one is a doctor, and the other a barrister, then if you follow one of them, you'll make more money than if they are both in minimum-wage jobs.
* If you do follow your parents in their careers, you will have had early exposure to some of the concepts. You may therefore perform better at university intake interviews, and the relevant prerequisites. They will also know about how to progress through the career in the best way.
* Regardless of nepotism, your parents' friends are another source of examples to follow in a similar way, and may be able to dispense similar advice.
* Even if you don't follow your parents in their careers. Having a parent who graduated from a competitive course at a prestigious university (which might be indicated in their lifetime earnings) means that you still have an example to follow, and their experience to draw on. One of the reasons for poor state school intake at Oxford is that most youths don't actually know how to apply. Also, if you know what to expect from such a place, you can make more of it, particularly in terms of the extra curricular offering - e.g. networking, bursaries and careers service.
* A youth with wealthy parents may be able take better advantage of low-paid and unpaid internships. If your parents can't support you through university and early career, then you may have to make more short term decisions - e.g. taking a low-paid summer job at a bar, instead of a lower or even unpaid job at a law firm, or working evenings and weekends instead of studying.

This is very encouraging if true. The difference between a 17 year old applying to "a top-10 institution" and a 17 year old applying to "Tumbleweed State" is almost exclusively what their parents income is (both directly for ability to pay, and indirectly through living in a desirable school district throughout their K-12 education).
I did my undergrad at a "tumbleweed state" school and grad school at a top-10. The difference in the average student at each school was privilege, not ability.

Is it broken or working like it's supposed to? I've never understood the desire of scientists to rank and self-segregate themselves into "elite" and "Tumbleweed State". First, it's not in scientist's self interest to give up chances at career progression to an elite cabal of admissions panels. Secondly, it actively restricts the flow of ideas to artificially limit the pool of respected scientists to only those people at a few institutions, even while the total number of scientists continues to grow. Finally, science is science, whether you're in Wichita Kansas or Cambridge Massachusetts. Why is it bad that scientists are judged on their objective output rather than the place they went to school?
Why is this scary? Experimental sciences typically don't pay well, regardless of where you go. Increasingly you need a masters to even get a lab bench job. PHDs very rarely pay well either unless you are in a few specific fields. People from the math and sciences who want to make money go into software or finance, its been this way for well over10 years.
It may pay better, but they are calculating the overall return, meaning the cost of that top-10 degree is a factor as well.

If a more exclusive college (x-axis) is proportionally more expensive, then this graph suggests that everyone, regardless of field, is better off going to a more expensive college. Getting a 12% annualized return on a $100k private bachelors is better than getting the same return on a $30k public university education.

This "article" is barely two paragraphs, and doesn't have any new information. There's a reason Art History majors working as baristas is a well worn cliche.
Bear in mind this is 20 years and not lifetime earnings. Many studies have come out that across majors lifetime earnings are anywhere from USD 300k to USD 1 million higher than those with only a high school diploma.[1]

Also the payscale report may not be peer-reviewed, which should give caution when going against many peer-reviewed studies on the subject.
I would love to also see the data linking ROI and whether you went to study something out of love for the craft or just because you wanted a well-paying job.
The report[0] this article reference has some puzzling exclusions to its data set. For example, why is Harvey Mudd included, but its next door neighbor Claremont McKenna College not? Some other notable liberal arts exclusions are Amherst College, Swarthmore, Bowdoin and Davidson.

This is very encouraging to read. I have had a sense of this all along - that which college you attend has very little to do with your intelligence or your capabilities. In my opinion it has more to do with how much your parents make then anything else. E=mc^2 wether you go to Princeton or you go to Caldwell Community.
Worth noting that selective schools also tend to be more expensive. Even if the ROI isn't markedly higher, high price tag means a "larger investment" into the high ROI option of college education.

I spent 6 years studying chemistry (BS and MS) and worked as a chemist for 3 months, then became a programmer in the 80's. Was my degree worth it? No. Would I be here without a degree, unlikely even back then.

MBA's also have a much wider variance on costs, so return per dollar spent may also be similar between good/expensive and bad/cheap schools.
They are counting return on investment though. Great MBA is super expensive.
On one hand it is nice to see that the school doesn't matter as much as people think but on the other hand it is sad that people see their studies only through the eyes of ROI. As if education has no value of its own. I'm probably just naive and an idealist.
I could take out a $150,000 loan to buy a splendid piece of art. It might uplift me spiritually and enlighten me in untold ways. But if the loan payments leave me unable to pay for rent or food, it's kind of moot.
As long as college is financed with debt, there needs to be a return that will outpace the debt interest or we end up with a generation of debtors who have no freedom to make use of the enlightenment they gained from their liberal arts degrees because they're forced to scramble and kowtow to the people who majored in business if they want to eat.

Naivete and idealism is how we have a whole generation saddled with student loans they can barely afford to pay, forcing them to stay in jobs they'd rather not have, delay buying a home or getting married for decades.

These people are not doing what they'd like to do, what they studied to do (because they can't find a job in it) and are praying for a windfall. I remember the long fight against tuition fees in my country and how we argued that tuitions wouldn't improve anything except leaving students with a lot of debt and problems. It would disadvantage so called "orchid subjects" and other subjects which didn't promise a great career. Utilisation of education would become more important than education. Even the switch to the Bachelor/Master system was/is seen as part of this development. Especially since it lead to a much more school like university. Which is the opposite of Humboldt's idea of research and studies being one.
Education might have some value to some people, in the same way that snowboarding or mountainbiking may have some value to some people. But the reason we make everybody do it is for the ROI.

Also, for anyone in the position of deciding which to do, I'd add the observation that it is way easier to go to college and get a formal education in science, math, or engineering, and pursue an ongoing adhoc self-directed education in the arts and humanities in your remaining decades of life, than the other way around. Locally to HN's interests, this calculation is a bit distorted by the way that programming can actually be learned via adhoc self-directed education, but as science, math, and engineering goes, I'd suggest it's on the short list of exceptions, not the rule.
