Another idea: line up some dev consulting work that would enable you to spend more time per week (in aggregate) than the 2-3 hours per day you're spending now. Consulting offers higher hourly wages and more flexibility, generally speaking.
There are clear downsides too. You would need to source these contracts yourself and figure out health insurance for your family.
Indeed. Our goal is to make it as easy as possible for developers to enable CD. It's still super early in this space, as shown by the fact that most companies have homegrown tooling (usually some scripts on top of Jenkins). It shouldn't be that way. When you think about other categories within DevOps (observability, security, alerting) there are many out-of-the-box tools to choose from such that one would never say "I think I'll build an observability tool from scratch here".

I've long wished I had the time and energy to think about and maybe even tackle the challenge you are facing - building a JIRA-killer. Go forth and conquer! I assume you mean the Spinnaker/K8s v1 provider abstracted away the K8s primatives. The new v2 provider allows you to deploy manifests and supports all K8s objects.
A (potentially) better approach to going multi-cloud is to use a CD tool like Spinnaker (spinnaker.io), which Google and Microsoft both support - and Netflix supports the integrations to AWS.

We’ve seen a few fundamental changes in culture across the board.
1. Product engineers are embracing ownership, and despite being on-call, they are excited at the prospect of being able to deploy their apps whenever they want.
2. Ops teams are transforming into engineering teams. When you start to automate everything (monitoring, deployments, testing, etc), it frees up ops folks to work on more interesting problems within an organization.
Btw, I realize our website still has "hosted spinnaker" as a product offering. It was the first thing we built, but as mentioned above, we pivoted towards an "on-prem" (in your AWS) version after conversations with lots of customers.

Today, our enterprise version of Spinnaker is hosted within your AWS account, not truly hosted Spinnaker as a service, although we def plan to offer that down the road. Our current customers have told us they prefer to run Spinnaker inside their own accounts b/c they fear data leakage.
I completely agree! I recently went shopping for a mattress at Sleep Train and they admitted that they mask the model numbers of their mattresses so you can't find them online for cheaper. Someone please build this.
