This is a great idea, I'd love to be able to use it on my TV. It would be nice if it also supported changing the playback speed to 1.5x, 2x etc - the youtube player has this so I'm assuming it's possible.
It's written in a comedic style, and takes you through what you would need to build to "reimplement modern civilization" if you found yourself stuck back in time.
Thanks for sharing, great story! I like that you touch on living there when you get old, a lot of the younger off-griders don't seem to have a clear plan for that, or are not talking about it.
I'm curious if you have thoughts on how you can deal with the inevitable medical issues as you get older:
- medical emergency, needing an ambulance right away
- a serious medical issue that needs frequent hospital appointments, say kidney dialysis or chemo
- more common stuff like needing a cane to walk, or no longer being able to climb a mast to fix your internet
This could be an interesting case - how high do property rights extend into the sky above your land? Obviously planes are allowed to fly over, even small private planes like Cessnas that fly pretty low.
Is it actually the filming aspect that makes it "illegal"? What if the guy in the Cessna has a GoPro pointing out the window? What if it's not regular filming but say thermal imaging, do the same rules still apply?
The option I see says Europe, which would include European countries that are not part of the EU (e.g. UK), so customs clearance would still be needed. It helps, but it's not granular enough for this particular case.
Not only a hindsight measure, but also a very individual measure. Society usually defines success as some combination of wealth and fame, but everyone can choose another definition of success for themselves.
Say someone defines success for themselves as "becoming the number 1 basketball player in the world", then gets into the top 10 and becomes rich and famous because of it. They might internally consider themselves a failure, even though they are very successful in the eyes of everyone else.
Reading the other comments here, I think the argument is that when most people say they came from nothing, they are ignoring roads, electrical grids, sewer systems, fire departments, police to enfore property rights etc. "Society" provided those - before the person was rich.
Of course, there are some people who got rich without any of those things, but probably a lot fewer.
Another possible reason for not having physical buttons is waterproofing. There would need to be a small gap between the button and the hob surface, and water or cooking oil could get in there, causing issues with the electronics, in addition to making it harder to clean.
They're competitors, and presumably are selling the item at different prices.
If Amazon is cheaper, HD would have to give you the item for less than they normally sell it. If Amazon is more expensive, why not buy the thing directly from HD, you're going there to pick it up anyway.
This would help but it's not foolproof, since there is no way to be sure the strings refer only to direct flights between the two locations.
Flight deals often involve transfers and/or complicated routings.
That definition would push people into local maximums, always continuing the grind towards the initial goal instead of stepping back and reassessing if the goal still makes sense. There has to be a balance between these actions.
It's a fair point you cannot choose your produce when buying online as you would from a supermarket crate. But that seems to be getting rarer in physical stores as well.
Where I live, most fruits and vegetables come pre-packaged in fixed weight plastic bags - a kilo of potatoes, etc. You can choose the bag you want but not the individual potatoes.
The graphs for Austria and Portugal are interesting. They show historical peaks earlier in the year, probably caused by the flu, that are higher than the current spike caused by the coronavirus. Especially for Portugal, the past peaks are way higher. That would seem to suggest the current numbers, while high for the time of year, are not completely unheard of.
