I understand the justification for UBI from a labor perspective if all “mundane jobs” are automated, but where I haven’t heard convincing justification is on the more abstract “life purpose” side of things. What happens, regardless of UBI, if we move towards a system that provides little to no purpose in working towards anything, or at a basic level, working for a living at all? I know many friends and relatives who reached retirement and faced anxiety and depression due to lack of “a reason to get up in the morning” - it feels like UBI would introduce this problem at a larger scale, and I’m not convinced by the general “we’ll all just be artists” concept either…
Your sentiment is not specific to the tech industry. Many who work in tech are quite blessed to have careers that, despite the supposed realities you mention, give them a quality of life others can only dream of.
Random thought dump here.. it’s kind of crazy how we all discuss the implications of the internet and social media on society and culture whilst all seeing dramatically different “versions” of the internet
The TikTok/Twitter/Instagram that I know is totally different than the version you’re familiar with. Dropping into your feeds would give me a totally different impression of what those platforms are
Basically, the way everyone mentally models and perceives these platforms is unique. YouTube in my brain is literally a different application than the YouTube in your brain
We’re probably really underestimating the impact of these differences on the way we view the world around us
The target market (for now) is probably their existing customers looking for better risk management by checking balance data through an authentic bank connection before initiating transactions through other Stripe products they already use.
I’m sure Stripe’s hope is that this becomes a full-blown Plaid killer, but as you mentioned that’s certainly not yet the case
This isn’t always the case, but sometimes I find myself naturally skeptical of people who seem overly interested in what’s going on in my life and overwhelming positive and complimentary of anything I mention - as if the nicer someone is the more I perceive their kindness to be BS. I’ve had to focus on suppressing this inclination to see the genuine good in others at times.
I don't think it's fair to assign blame to "positivity" and "optimism" as others in the comments have.
It takes an incredible amount of positivity to start or join a small startup. You have to believe that you/your coworkers will accomplish something that very few people have done successfully, and that requires a lot of confidence when things look gloomy.
As a total outsider here, it sounds like most ex-Fast employees are very talented and positive people. Perhaps the problem was not overall "company positivity" so much as it was executive leadership being naive and unwilling to A) identify when serious pivots/changes needed to be made and B) actually make those pivots.
Positivity is good, but not when it translates to unchecked naiveté. If you believe too strongly in your ability to succeed, you might start rejecting any signs of failure as they crop up. When something goes wrong or a mistake is made, you might find a scapegoat or otherwise discount the severity of the problem.
The other "reason for failure" might simply be that... well... startups are hard. Sometimes it just doesn't work. There might not be anyone to blame.
You should pivot to providing a simple API for other developers to integrate their users’ sports getting data into their own apps - I could see that being a really useful thing
To be fair, those are a few exceptions that buck a greater trend of Presidents and lawmakers almost universally attending expensive and prestigious undergrad and graduate institutions
