Why is it obvious. Google is a much more powerful profitable entity that has equally good models. Facebook uses data from Libgen. Both are highly profitable companies who could pay for resources but don't.
Anthropic, the ethical fork of OpenAI doesn't do anything much different nowadays.
OpenAI may have had a head start, but the competition is not far behind.
> I wouldn't call o1 a "system". It's a model, but unlike previous models, it's trained to generate a very long chain of thought before returning a final answer
I will be happy to use a no-code platforms that lets me eject out into a standard application. Otherwise, I'm just learning and depending on a proprietary system.
Once you need something slightly complex, no-code becomes non-trivial. It requires serious commitment to learn all the techniques the designers came up with.
So most people who use these tools use them for for simple or short-lived apps and side projects, which they could now use web frameworks, but just want to try something new, because they know it's trivial.
Neeva jumped on the AI train after GPT3. The original plan was a privacy-focused Search. People don't pay for that stuff. I can't believe $millions was invested in that idea.
Personalized search - a search engine for all your content based on the data you've collected and visited and private would be something people might pay for.
His books are enjoyable, I'd recommend his most recent one "Four thousand weeks" and the previous one "The Antidote" as well. Especially if you're overwhelmed or gets hit with anxiety often.
If you want to really understand why it is that way, you have to dig deeper, and you'll find they are much more deep-rooted and has tentacles everywhere. It's simplistic to point to one job function and call it out as unfair as the system is set up so some key positions accrue value.
Capital allocators are always paid top dollar. CEOs are only a small part of it. Wall street bankers are paid top dollar too? They find investment opportunities that can generate returns. Traders make a lot of money too. What value do they add to society? They help in the price discovery of assets. Are they paid fairly, who knows?
From a job complexity standpoint, CEO jobs are more challenging than bankers since they have to manage a real business to generate a positive return. Bankers have no skin in the game and yet make millions.
They lifted millions of us at least a class or more, financially.
Lower -> middle
Middle -> upper middle
Some even got rich.
In a caste discriminating society, they leveled the playing field.
Their business partners continue to do business with them. I remember an internal story, during the GFC, we worked on credit for a client who couldn’t pay their invoice($ millions). These companies are not angels, nor they only hire the best. But they’ve been the launchpad for millions of IT careers that wouldn’t have happened otherwise.
This thread is full of generalized insults at a million people based on where they work. If someone did the same based on a different attribute of a population, they'd be banned.
I've worked at one of these companies but left over a decade ago. I know how we're looked at when we do client work (part of why I left). Some of my colleagues were less competent, true. But, some will wipe the floor with the client employees we did the work for.
To WITCH employees:
If you are an employee at one of these companies, remember you are not the worst. Many of you come from humble backgrounds and are just learning the ropes. The world is cruel. It is a tough place, and you will be discriminated against. This is your fuel. You've already made great strides; keep going. You have to.
He was worth $130B. Now, $34B. Hasn't sold any significant piece of it while he knew there are risks with changing the direction of the company. That should count for something.
~No they aren't rebuilding Hydrogen in Remix.~
Edit: Spoke too soon on the above, sorry.
Remix raised funding. Ran out of money with no scope to self sustain or raise money. They downsized (see Kent Dodds. Perhaps there are others). Strong engineers that built the platform got acquihired.
The best video model is Google's.
