The finance fun noone knows about. I knew someone who did this as revenge. Sent some asshole a fake invoice for US$stupidmoney for a couple of months which said asshole ignored, then sent a certified mail 'I forgive asshole US$stupidmoney', and copied the IRS. IRS went to collect on the unpaid taxes, and if you've never been there, the IRS does not play when it comes to that sort of money. I don't know how it ended, but there were multiple lawyers involved, so it was expensive no matter what.

I have many times chastised commenters about shitting on other peoples toy/hobby/side projects, but like many others I'm a bit lost on the fun of iterating on "get the Linux 0.whatever source code and rewrite it in rust..." and then crowing "LOOK WHAT I DID!" on HN. If the OP had documented "this is how I prompted the code generating LLM du jour to produce an equivalent to this early Linux kernel, this is the AI workflow I used, and this is how I overcame the problems along the way..." or some such, I'd be all in on this being interesting. As it is, it's Yet Another LLM generated bit of self promotion avoiding saying 'AI did this' and disguised as 'innovation', just like the other ten thousand 'I took something people did all the hard work on and had AI gen up a clone in rust/go/python/whatever in an afternoon...aren't I clever'.

Yes...I remember the model 80. The cards you're talking about are 1) a design choice IBM made to use MCA as the official way to expand memory in the machine and not something any PCI bus machine I'm aware of followed, and 2) used the same generation memory as the planar memory. I don't think you're talking apples to oranges. YMMV.

That's not surprising. At the speed DDR4 runs, PCB design has to account for all sorts of weird effects. Adding the additional traces on the adapter probably pushes all sorts of timing over acceptable thresholds. There's a reason one of the big textbooks in the area is subtitled "A Handbook of Black Magic". [1]
I would counter tho that 1) this isn't the first time there's been a memory price/supply crunch, and "I've got a drawer full of last gen memory I can't use" is kinduva IT cliche, and 2) 'more memory' has always been a pain point, especially with industry practices like chipsets only supporting relatively small physical memory relative to address space (e.g. all those Intel LGA775 chipsets that capped at 4 or 8GB). Oh, and 2a) 'faster disk' has always been a pain point...
But, yeah...obviously my impression of things doesn't match market reality.
