I've had horrible luck driving cars - thankfully nothing as bad as injuring humans or colliding with oncoming traffic, but I've come close. The stakes - and expenses - are so high compared to other forms of transportation. I prefer cycling although doing it in NYC I don't know if it's actually rationally safer or cheaper than living elsewhere with a car.

You’ve got it exactly backwards. Committees take away autonomy by introducing external influence. Politics by definition is guiding policy, not acting with purpose within the confines of policy.
