Does anyone turn these old devices into a project and install cool software on it only to never use it again? I stop using multiple devices because having several iPads is as useful as having several phones. I install stuff to “give it a longer life” but without purpose I don’t actually use it.
What program do you have an issue with? Wine has been supporting a lot of non gaming software for a long time better than Windows itself. Proton has similarly been good for a long time, it has been big. The deck wasn’t some magical finished product it was built on the skelton of steam machines.
Does anyone else get confused by "apps" and "executables"? This one uses the term "Windows Apps" for ".exe" files, I wondered why anyone would want to run a Windows App https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/store/apps/windows
I don't understand how its better than VM, it says run them like they're native, but its separate windows for single applications, I thought it would use something like WINE.
It should be called "A Windows VM for executables in Linux with native windowing" unless I didn't understand it.
It doesn’t make much sense, how would money be guaranteed to come back after making its way to through the government and back? The cost of electricity already functions more efficiently; don’t take money out of peoples pockets so you don’t need to give it back.
A pigovian tax by insurance would work better, I definitely think environmental protection is needed but politicians will just use the money they get in nefarious ways.
Software efficiency is traded for time efficiency, you see this less with hardware constraints like embedded systems programming. As hardware capabilities increase, efficiency is less necessary. I see a reversal of this with rust (ripgrep is amazing), web assembly, while making programming easy leads to poorly optimized software like electron wrappers.
Google isn’t dumb. They are an advertising company that creates hype with other experimental products (to increase stock prices) they fully intend to dismantle, and buys out functional tech companies.
They are using hype to increase their stock and axe them later to show a better earnings report further increasing stock prices.

That solves nothing, it only lines politician’s pockets. The cost of electricity is the deterrent currently, which is why you don’t see everyone mining. If you want to make electricity cost more, it’ll “solve” more than crypto mining, it’ll just make mostly poor people have a lower standard of life.
For anyone into photography, an unrelated topic is that Amazon prime offers unlimited photo storage, you can upload all your RAWs as long as you keep your subscription.
The next generation of cameras should move away from SD cards. I can’t wait until you can stick NVMe on one, it’s a shame they don’t even make any emmc SD cards. Even the iPhone has had that for half a decade now.
Digital cameras really suck, they’re all horrible proprietary hardware devices, basically expensive locked down computers with large sensors that attach to lens through proprietary mounts.
I’ve been at a friends with all the streaming subscriptions. The most used is HBO (been watching Silicon Valley and they got tons of movies), Amazon is second (terrible ads at the beginning, sells movies as well), then Disney+.
They shouldn’t have changed the definition. I saw them as the same as flu shots. They call them seasonal flu vaccines, the COVID ones have the same issues but decrease their efficiency rapidly.
If people knew it would lose its efficiency so rapidly I doubt they’d have used it, or gotten 2 shots in quick succession.
It would cause tick saliva from causing infection for a lifetime, it matters so you can give a vaccine and not need to upkeep it especially in rural areas. It matters because it will prevent it forever. I think I’m thinking of something that lasts longer, someone mentioned a binding vaccine.
What does at risk of polio mean? I read that polio infections only affect Americans who aren’t vaccinated and touch recently vaccinated baby feces. If you aren’t in that situation you won’t get polio.
Ideally we’d want neutralizing vaccines wouldn’t we? Before the pandemic, my idea of a vaccine was a preventative measure that worked for long periods of time. I read Harvard did a study of tetanus shots and found boosters had no significant statistically beneficial effect.
I have never heard of a polio vaccine have this issue, I think Salk did an excellent job at testing it’s effects without forcing participants and there’s a great deal of historical data to prove it. Of course a vocal minority may have issues but I haven’t heard them on polio at all, only on relativity new Lyme disease vaccine ‘causing autism’.
I’ll look at binding vaccines more, I just want vaccines that aren’t subscription services.
Will this be a neutralizing vaccine? I like the idea of mRNA based vaccines but unless it prevents infections and is permanent like for polio, I don’t see any great uptake if it’s expected to decompose rapidly like the COVID vaccines.
I’m reading the law and I don’t see that issue. All the issues are from the requirements of the FDA, making it patent free solves nothing, unless you’re talking about another industry, the cases are all from healthcare patents from the wiki. This isn’t new or something unusual, most of the issues are in healthcare and the requirements to produce them are not going to be fixed by removing patents.
Academic papers do submit sponsorships and conflicts of interest, and there’s also the case of academia wanting cutting edge equipment from private companies and doing deals with them. This is much more honest than the smoking research, the federal government has an interest in maintaining patent law, it has no incentive to give free access to no fee licensing. There’s lots of laws with access to healthcare information, which requires industry knowledge where the information is freely given to corporations to do research on, which would not be allowed federally. The researchers are not usually working because they’re interested in making their research public information, and while post grads are funded by government, they are free to develop royalty free information, they choose not to and the government wants to partially fund corporations. I don’t see the problem, people want to make money and they want to do cutting edge research.
I see academia and research papers as advertising rather than a patent minefield. There are plenty of people who want to work for the common good, but the government wants to fund private entities to produce products, government contracts is what the US does instead of its own production.
I see computer science papers with non of these issues under the current law.
Hasn’t it always been corporate interests in academia? Stanford was a joke when it was founded, MIT was being petitioned into becoming a tech school. Patrons of sciences have always been funded by private interests, there isn’t any corruption.

Private profitability research is no different. I don’t understand what you mean by losing accuracy, for some research corporate hardware or copyrighted work is required or the best choice.
I thought they gave the ability for other pharma to make the mRNA drugs that require incredible investment, to make it seem open.

Windows can run Linux in the subsystem and has a better Android emulator than Linux. Windows doesn’t run old windows programs as well as wine though, and if it hasn’t happened yet I can’t wait for the day you run legacy windows programs in the Linux subsystem through wine.
You’re not wrong, using virtualization like a Windows VM in Linux is still using windows and is the best way for compatibility. Wine either works ok (mostly), needs lots of weird configuration to get it to intergrate into Linux or look ok, or it doesn’t work at all most of the time.
