Hazel Analytics provides data and analytics services to food service/retail companies and related industries, working to improve food safety compliance. Half of the 100 largest food retail chains use Hazel technology, and we proudly count Uber Eats, Instacart, Target, and Starbucks among our customers. In 2019, we won two food safety innovation awards, and we still have big ambitions to keep advancing the state of the art in food safety management. We're also honored to have been recognized by Built in Seattle — two years in a row — as one of Seattle's best small businesses to work for.
We're currently seeking an engineering manager to lead a team of 5-6 software engineers, working predominantly on our data collection, data quality, and data sharing initiatives. The role will blend a strong focus on people support and team growth with near-term project support and medium-term roadmap planning. An engineering manager will be exclusive to a single team, so you can build strong working relationships, invest in your team's success, and execute on your vision for operational excellence.
We also have an opening for a senior software engineer. Our tech stack is largely Python on the backend and React on the frontend; PostgreSQL is our primary data store, and we're deployed on Google Cloud. The team culture is light on meetings and focused in our use of processes, so that engineers can have plenty of time to focus on doing what they do best. Engineers have excellent ownership over the platform and visibility into business decisions that guide product direction and have ample opportunities to add their own influence, at both strategic and operational scales.
> We're also hiring a Product Manager and VP of Sales! It's a great time to join as we're embarking on a massive scale-up for customer growth.
Our team culture is laid-back and friendly, balanced by a strong sense of personal ownership and motivation to deliver; we're a small company with close collaboration among all roles.
Please refer to our job postings for salary ranges. Total compensation includes equity, year-end bonus, and a generous benefits package (including parental leave). Our current plan is to adopt a hybrid model of "minimum 2 days/week in office" starting in 2022; although we're currently remote and will be adjusting plans according to public health developments, we're not presently looking for long-term remote hires on the engineering side. We aren't able to provide H1B sponsorship; relocation assistance within the United States is negotiable.

We're currently seeking senior full-stack and back-end software engineers to help us realize our ambitions. Back-end engineers will work predominantly in our Google Cloud Platform environment with Python (Flask), Elasticsearch, PostgreSQL 12 (on Google Cloud SQL), and Docker; full-stack engineers will tend to work a bit less in infrastructure and will add JavaScript (React) to their areas of expertise. We keep processes and meetings to a minimum in order for engineers to stay in the zone. Our team culture is laid-back and friendly, balanced by a strong sense of personal ownership and motivation to deliver; we're a small company, so engineers collaborate closely with non-engineers. For this senior role, I'm looking for someone who will be comfortable taking the lead on major projects, mentoring other engineers (at least informally), and having a stake in our technical roadmap.
Compensation is $125K - $160K (DOE), plus equity, year-end bonus, and a generous benefits package (including parental leave). We're currently working from home due to the COVID-19 pandemic but planning on an eventual return to in-office work; at present, we're not considering fully-remote team members, but I'll continue to weigh it for the future. The normal "Who is hiring?" thread will likely be created on Monday. Due to lower front-page visibility, the hiring threads are typically not started on major US holidays.
Wow, I'm really thrilled about this. Around 2014, I had a concept for a recipe app that I wanted to build to scratch my own itch: unit conversions, integrated timers, parallel flows (do X while Y). I had been hoping to work with an annotated recipe corpus to facilitate some of the work, but after some research, I couldn't see how to pursue it meaningfully given my time and budget. I might have to pull that idea out of the heap of abandoned projects now.

Hazel Analytics is a fast-growing food tech company on a mission to create innovative products that change the way organizations use food safety data. Founded in 2014 by professors from Stanford, UCLA, and the University of Maryland, we're the proven market leader in health department data analytics, serving Amazon, Cheesecake Factory, Chick-fil-A, Starbucks, Subway, Target, Whole Foods, and more — nearly half of the largest 100 food retail chains. Our platform transforms diffuse and disparate local health department data into actionable operational intelligence for our customers, who need to proactively monitor food safety and regulatory compliance while serving millions of meals every day. In recognition of our impact, we're a proud recipient of the Food Marketing Institute's Food Safety Innovation Award (2019) and Jack in the Box's Food Safety Innovation Award (2016).
We're currently seeking a data scientist who will help identify new opportunities and develop high-impact data analytics, predictive models, and statistical tools for our user community. You'll be expected to be both a creative and critical thinker, to have strong judgment in prioritization and execution, and to strike a balance between moving quickly and delivering high-trust analytics. You'll need to not only think and act like a leader but also roll up your sleeves and deliver production-ready models. Our tech stack predominantly features Python and R, but your input will be instrumental in further defining our architecture.
We're profitable and privately-held (i.e. no VC investors), which means your equity is worth something from day one, and you’ll be able to make a direct impact on the company's strategy and execution. Personally, I was hired from a HN job thread — I'm looking forward to seeing some great HN applicants!
Not exactly the same scenario, but my little company (barely over 10 people) decided to splurge on GitLab Silver, and it was a royal pain for someone on GitLab's side to get in touch with us and take our money, even though we've already been a lower-tier customer for a while.
The UX isn't as polished as GitHub's, but I can live with it. The billing system, on the other hand, seems to be rather dreadful.
