Here is a well balanced explanation why ECC-RAM. That being said, if the RAM is the weakest link it doesn't matter what underlying FS is used.

I don't think this is crazy at all.

We use something similar as this internally as well, which we custom built to our needs. Instead of Serf we use Zookeeper/etcd though.
