Other posters are providing advice about writing from the shoulder, and writing slower etc which I would agree with. The other thing I would mention is: how tightly do you grasp/hold the pen? Try relaxing the grasp a bit.

(I've noticed this with students I support. In the UK the public exams known as GCSEs and GCEs are written papers, and some adult students who need to take them have similar fatigue problems).

Your comment stopped me in my tracks a little bit.

Is a 'bias' in a piece of writing generally a property of word to word choice and sentence to sentence construction or is it something more nebulous? Especially in terms of the appreciation of mathematics and someone's hesitance about publishing a mathematical argument they think is ugly or brute forced in some way.

Perhaps useful for those training developers mentioned in some posts here who need the TIL experience with unix based systems. Free shell account on a netbsd unix, and I recollect that a small one-off donation provides access to Web space and other enhancements. Choose the login name wisely as that becomes the subdomain for the Web space.

Have a look at MWM (Motif Window Manager). Colour icons (gasp) and windows that actually maximise. Packaged in Debian so I suppose around in Arch repositories somewhere.

twm still around but might be a separate package these days and not in X11 core. CWM (Calm Window Manager) from OpenBSD is available in portable form and packaged for Debian. Very light and good for tiny screens (little decoration).

No, the project leader (corenomial?) packed it in. BunsenLabs is one follow on project and the other is CrunchBang++. Alas both I think are 64 bit only in recent versions because they are based on Debian, which from Trixie (v13 on) is 64 bit only for installation.

I'd look at antiX for reviving a netbook if limited to 32 bit.

I'm posting this off a 2009 Samsung NC10 Netbook running antiX linux 26[1] (32 bit, debian Trixie packages but an older 5.10 series kernel) and it has Abiword running, with ROXterm and Firefox with BBC News in the other tab. The netbook has a mechanical hard drive and a gig of ram and a small but not outrageous keyboard. It jogs along OK. I dug it out of the cupboard when I saw this post.

Not a snappy experience even with the light IceWM based desktop but useable and faster than some corporate PCs I've used in educational settings in the past.

[1] antiX strikes me as a lot less work than the OAs hand crafted Arch install but the whole point is you can do what you want with free software. https://antixlinux.com/

Lab book with numbered pages and dated entries for semi-thought out specifications when it gets serious? But there needs to be a level of scribbling on whiteboards/backs of envelopes/napkins before that stage?

I think that the two examples of messy notebooks that the OA links to are remarkably restrained.

My practice is to capture the raw stuff on the right hand page and then keep the left hand page for later clarification or distillation. Thus a quick flick through a notebook shows which pages got developed further than the daily flux.

Thanks for posting that link.

The graph has a key on the right hand side that clearly labels each colour of line, and the horizontal axis is scaled in months of each year. Scrolling down gets you notes and links to data sources.

In answer to another poster in this thread, the dataset only reaches back to 1983, I'm assuming because that is when they started monitoring these temperatures?

I think 'to draw' is ambiguous here. You took the phrase to mean 'some strategies and techniques for making good drawings' and the author possibly meant 'how to make marks like you would with normal painting software but working around the foibles of 9front's paint'.

But then the whole thing has to be seen as whimsical.

Over here in the UK I've seen some pretty original bicycle adaptation with electric motors and even a 2 stroke engine added to aid propulsion.

Just a footnote to parent post: Groff is developed as a complete set of programs and macro files. Debian, hence Ubuntu and other derivative distros, segment groff into a base package with what you need to display man pages (using the man macros) that comes as part of a base install and an additional package that has the mom macros and all. Just 'apt install groff' to get the full groff distribution.

Another possibility is Slackware 15.0 which is the stable release that gets updates. Available in 32 and 64 bit, runs a 5.15 series kernel (antiX 26 32bit uses a 5.10.x kernel). I have an install on an ancient Thinkpad T42 with 1Gb ram, a single centrino chipset CPU, 40Gb hard drive and radeon graphics. Chugs along nicely with Abiword, Gnumeric and Dillo. Firefox will load but is deeply unhappy.

(I install everything except the KDE and XAP package sets, and then install selected packages from XAP as I need them e.g. GIMP, xpdf and so on)

MX has more recent packages for some things though, Slackware 15 is getting mature.

Reaching back decades, I used to do a first draft longhand on file paper, cross bits out, rewrite bits. Then bang it out on a typewriter. Then once over with a red pen the next day, and a complete re-type.

I'm not sure that I could work that way now, but it was more deliberate. Less 'drive by' thought.
