I'm sure the same argument was made in favor of slavery way back when it was still legal. After all, slaveowners were free to pursue more meaningful things while their slaves were collapsing of heat exhaustion and malnutrition while working on the plantation.
Illegal immigrants often find "employment" at below minimum wage, and in inhumane working conditions, because otherwise what's the reason to hire them over locals? They're also more likely to be abused or mistreated, because what are you gonna do, go to the police?
A less harsh variant of this often happens with H1Bs, which I know all too well because I was an H1B myself 15 years ago: you get hired for a job that's way below your skill/pay level, and then you keep your mouth shut until you get a green card, which for some nationalities takes a decade or more. Glorified indentured servitude. If you lose your job - GTFO of the country in 2 weeks. Doesn't matter if you have a child or whatever, GTFO anyway.
It boggles the mind that people could be in favor of illegal immigration and H1B abuse, especially if these same people are in favor of worker rights and unionization.

So yeah, “people like this” do exist, and they end up in positions of power with depressing regularity.
I wish I could support individual journalists somehow. As things are today I’d be supporting the status quo where the owner has complete editorial control, and the audience has none. I’m 100% not interested in that. I also don’t really want to support the massive administrative apparatus and various other freeloaders which tend to dominate organizations once they grow past a certain size. Under the current set up a hard hitting journalist won’t get an extra dime.

That may have been what they said to the Western media. It does not necessarily match what they said to their own government run TV channels and newspapers.
I still remember the reports on TV from there at the time. Initially there was a flat out denial that anything happened at all, but once the scale of the catastrophe became clear (within about a day), and it became clear that it can’t be swept under the rug, we started seeing the coverage of unbelievable heroics that people would demonstrate. I mean literally firefighters pouring water into the molten reactor core by standing at the edge of it, and then dying the same day from radiation poisoning. The radiation was so strong that the TV helicopter filming the reactor from above (which in itself was heroic given the kinds of shit suspended in the air) would show the most radioactive part with sort of a haze. Endless streams of trucks pouring concrete, etc, etc. It was 30 years ago so I don’t remember much, but man to get the Secretary General to admit such a bad fuckup — that was something truly extraordinary.
