Codeberg has presumably way less people working for it than the Linux Foundation, and has to monitor an avalanche of codebases for slop. Of course they aren't going to be able to pull off what Linux can do.
When talking about "open source" models no one is talking about the legal framework and textual doctrine of open source. They simply want to know: "can I run this on hardware I own or no?" That's it. It's simply about control. If you don't think there's a difference between models you can download and run on hardware you own, regardless of how big it is, vs. models you can only talk to through an API, you are seeing the forest for the trees.
You are also indirectly helping the closed SOTA model toll-keepers by taking the focus away from their mass copyright theft and onto some pointless textbook definition.
It is a given. Unless the Trump admin figures out how to ban 1s and 0s, you can't stop Chinese labs from open sourcing their models. They can certainly ban new providers from using the Chinese models, but they can't ban Canadian ones, European ones, other Asian countries etc. from setting up provider proxies and bypassing those rules. Then what, great firewall of USA? Block off all internet traffic to other countries? Bye bye economy.
I think the burden of proof is on the closed SOTA model providers to prove they have a moat, because common sense indicates they don't.

Not taking a side here in the whole Bun vs. ZSF dispute, but isn't the entire selling point of Rust that you get a bunch of battle-tested guarantees simply from compiling the program? Is there even a metric for battle-tested? I would say something like sqlite is battle tested vs a vibe-coded network server in c, but does that mean rewriting anything in rust truly mean starting all the way back at square one?
Also, didn't Anthropic roll out a version of CC using the Rust rewrite of bun? Surely they didn't just say "works on my machine" and chuck it into production?

When I was in the Netherlands, one of the global gold standards in terms of urban planning and design, I noticed it wasn't only more pleasant as a pedestrian or cyclist, it was more pleasant as a driver as well. Lights were smart and did not sit on red forever if you were the only one waiting at an intersection.
This comic suggests there's some "invisible, massively complicated" mesh of signal interactions we can never possibly fathom, and therefore wasting precious hours over the course of our lives sitting at an intersection is the most optimal one.

People were told for years they can't use Rust for their new projects because it hasn't been "proven" in industry yet. So the option was to sit back and wait (chicken and egg) or move to rewrite a bunch of projects so that it could actually be "proven". Not saying this is the only reason why it happens (every language has its Zealots) but it certainly makes more sense.
Due to the explosion of new programming languages over the past few decades your options are to either aggressively expand wherever possible or die out because you're not "proven".

When $llm_company begins asking you to open your wallet to fix every vulnerability, bug, or other breaking issue, instead of the guy in Nebraska doing it for free because someone mentored him, will the economics change? Probably not.
Provide specific examples of AI providing something novel. Eliding something from a vast dataset that would take humans longer to analyze is helpful, but not novel.

The entire point of AI (or even the mythical non-existent AGI everyone keeps insisting will be around "soon") was to make life for humanity easier, and as someone who uses these tools almost daily, my life isn't improved at all, neither that of my colleagues, family, or friends n=~30.

Why was this project published under an account named "Google Workspace"? Google seems to want to have their cake and eat it too, same with the cli creator.
If you want to publish a project under open source and you are the sole creator/owner -> do it in your own time, under your OWN individual github account. Nothing good has ever come from ceeding control of these things to giant corporations who only care how much it will increase their profit next quarter.
