In the work rules book about google, Bock claims (apparently using a lot of real data from google) that employee performance follows a power law distribution.
The winds of war and war and remembrance books (or audio books) are a pretty good way to get a feel for ww2. They're historically accurate fiction and offer a lot of long-form detail and context (at least from the US/allies side of things)
This approach is definitely possible with a good web-based git IDE. We use gitlab's webIDE and have taught a few very non-technical (even temporary) employees how to do simple commits of markdown files (the trick here is high visibility into their commits -slack messages- and safeguards to make sure important things don't go live via CI too soon). There's a number of rough edges to sort out but this is vastly simpler, faster, more flexible etc for many situations (and amazing to not be using jira or wordpress :) )
My wife and I are (slowly) building an ios app to track daily family memories (impetus was having our son in 2019). We got this idea from an article long ago where the author used a spreadsheet to capture small notes of daily family life and especially note any child milestones. The app is close to being usable daily (each parent can add a note, separate field for milestone, edit, and list recent days) but it's ugly as sin. It's written in swift/swiftui with a go backend (also an older react web version exists if anyone was interested working on that). Totally chill project with no expectation of commercial viability

Has anyone found a good family friendly alternative? In particular I would really like to:
- Pay for the service (sustainable/trustworthy business model)
- Be able to very tightly control access to albums as I really don't want kid photos ending up on facebook or similar due to crazy aunt kathy (in google photos anyone with access can add anyone else and until recently there was no way to remove people)
- Ability to require a full/proper login for guests (no hard-to-guess urls as security)
- Confirmed and well-tested backup as a feature (sha1 of the backup matches my local, original copy, no stripping of the geo data!)
- Decent ios and android clients that can auto backup all photos on the device
Using the reminder aka notifications feature of the android app got the habit to stick for me. Total pita to figure out how to get it turned on though :)
