While there is only 1 biggest player (openAI) I would say we can, but if it gets to a point where we have multiple players i suppose it would be extremely hard without proper controls already in place.
To me this is quite an interesting idea, I am not sure if now is the correct time to pause it. Or how to spot when it is correct time. What are your thoughts?

Seems whenever somebody is not happy with something their immediate response is you are a creep. I find those kind of people disturbing.

imho CORS is poorly designed mechanism, you should be able to flag api.domain.com as a safe place, making a single cors request at start of user interaction with your app.
Also some sort of caching should be more than welcome.
On a side note at previous company I've worked at, speed was critical, so we were forced to do same tactic, use /api instead of api.domain.com which resulted in huge improvements :)

It is not unprofessional, at the end of the day market is hot and it is your right to capitalise on it.
Also first thing you need to do is take care of yourself, there are always job tradeoffs. And sometimes in the name of money and benefits we all sometimes do a little bit of self-convincing that shit-show is not that, it might improve with time ect.
At the end of the day, looking back for each one of those sel-convincing thoughts i've done i felt bad, and felt it should have followed my guts and left almost instantly.
At last company i've worked at there was no code reviews, no pull requests, at first it felt wierd but later on I was 100% sure those guys are complete amateurs.

I have gmail and facebook accounts way before mobile was invented, if they've added that feature for mobile imho it means password was stored in plain text or with 2 way encryption
