Blackhat SEO doesn't work unless the company is producing positive results with customers. You can use all the shady SEO work out there, but if viewers and customers aren't using the site then blackhat can't save it.
So it really comes down to the fact that your competitor is doing something better than you outside SEO. Better product, service, prices, customer service? Whatever it is, they are doing it.
So rather than cry about it to HackerNews, you should probably spend the time and effort working on your own business and stop worrying about your competitors.
You see this all the time with companies who spend 100% more time on their competitors than they do their own business. Then they whine about not being number one. It's really pathetic and this post is no different.
If you look at the existing retail software market versus the open source market you'll quickly see that retail is obviously the better choice for a company in terms of product life and revenue. I mean the biggest companies in the world got to their positions by offering software to feel a market need. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Ebay all the big tech giants, as well as the newer player like Facebook, Uber, AirBnB and just about everyone else who is making money has done so through selling limited access to their software. Sure some of those might offer open source products, but they never make money or have much value.
Open source software is important to our society because it helps people learn, but it doesn't have an impact on the real world where money runs things.
People who want everything to be open source tend to just want it for their own personal benefit and 95% of them don't contribute to that community either, they just like having something to complain about.
Thanks for posting this...I think up until this article was posted, everyone on earth assumed it was perfectly fine for Doctors to work 30 hours straight.
My guess is that your guess or opinion isn't valued at all anyway.
So if you're going to add something valuable to the conversation then don't say anything at all.
The $70 price tag has been an amazing gift to the developer community as well. Without it we wouldn't have so many options for great editors that are totally free and open source.
Had they simply priced sublime around $30, they would have sold 10x or more licenses and not have to deal with the piracy problem nearly as much.
Sublime is a great product, but that's one of the worst business decisions I've ever seen.
John Romero is totally irrelevant, why does anyone pay attention to him. Here we are so many years later and all he's got going for him is talking about "the good ole days" at Id. Seriously, look it up, that's all he does.
Id Software was John Carmack. Had it not been for Carmack no one would even know who Romero is. It's actually surprising that Romero worked with Carmack for so many years and doesn't seemed to have even learned anything from it. What's Romero doing now? Making flash games for Windows phones?
Clearly this is because of user error. I use it everyday, never had a problem with it at all.
So basically, you're an idiot. Don't blame that on the system.
There isn't much interest because for the most part, intelligent people don't devote themselves to things that can easily be proven false such as religion.
Sadly though, a lot of the books either are or will be out of date as more updates come to Swift and break existing code.
I've been working on and off with Swift since the beginning, it has a lot of great characteristics, but updates breaking code isn't something most developers have time to worry about.
