One of my recurring daydreams is that someone from a few hundred years ago is accompanying me in whatever mundane task I’m doing. When I’m driving, for example, I try to imagine what questions they’d have about what’s going on and how incredible they’d find it.
I think frequently about how European kings didn’t have the variety in spices that I do in my cabinet, or machines that could lower the temperature of a room.
Abusive? I know that HN has a very pro FOSS culture, which, with some users, seems to extend to the expectation that companies and products should exist out of the goodness of developers’ hearts. But charging willing users for an API that costs money to maintain is “abusive”?

What makes you think that having the focus on the search box vs the code area in VSC constitutes a different mode in the same way as vim normal vs insert modes? You haven’t explained what you consider a mode to be.
I think there is something very clearly different in vim, as first time users must have it explained to them that typing `j` when their cursor is at the start of the code area will do very different things depending on the mode they’re in. It’s a paradigm not present in editors like VSCode.
This difference is usefully characterized as “modal”.
What’s your target for percentage of ancillary appointments that are accepted? I’m intrigued by the idea, but in the screenshot it shows 2 use cases that don’t make much sense to me: do most people really schedule dry cleaning around a meeting? Would I really carve out time to pick up flowers for an airport pickup?
The suggestions could be nice, but if I find myself rejecting 90%+ then they would be a hassle…
To those calling this stupid, maybe it's just a POC/prototype? As others stated, LLMs don't seem like the right long term solution here, but as a short-term it doesn't seem so bad. I could easily imagine working on a side project and deciding "chatGPT is a quick and dirty way to do this, if I gain _any_ traction I'll go back and code this properly."
Although, I did just pass the article into chatGPT, asked it to list all the edge cases possible, and to produce some code that covers the edge cases, and at first glance it did ok...
Clicked on the link expecting it to be a discussion about energy systems on lunar expeditions, or challenges, something like that.
Instead I found it to be a product for "endless energy"?
Scrolled to see "your time machine has arrived."
Scrolled further to discover the team has "talented people", then that I could design my system today.
Clicked "Explore system" and found the explanation for what this product is and the option to reserve: it's a "clean energy break"!
Seriously, why does a company page for a _battery_ take scrolling through pithy Apple-style marketing language and multiple clicks to discover that we're talking about a _battery_?
In my university, the slang term for an uninitialized variable was "dead squirrel". IIRC, some TA had described uninitialized C++ variables as follows: "It could be any value: zero, 100, or even a dead squirrel."
If hurl ever allows uninitialized variables, I would love to see use of an uninitialized variable to `hurl` a `squirrel`! :)
I understand what you’re saying and I can relate to some degree, but it’s hard to read comments like this and not think I’m browsing r/IAmVerySmart.
I have some friends with whom I might try to poke at the nuances of the philosophy of a Supreme Court decision, but I have other friends who would be bored out of their mind. They also have a need for cognition and love to tear topics apart, but _different_ topics.
I’m very glad to read this, as I am feeling in a similar boat, and the strong impetus to move was getting close to suicide. Thankfully, I am making progress and I have committed to the changes, which lifts my spirits.
This is exactly how I feel right now. In 2 hours I’m going to announce my 1 month notice to my boss. I have no next job lined up, but I do have about 1.5 years of expenses saved up. I am awful at my job, the writing is on the wall, and for months I haven’t found the motivation to care to do better. It’s demoralizing, especially since I consider myself a capable person.
