Disagree as much as you want, but copy-paste renders the whole retype your address useless as a typo protection.
Even with a correct address it's not a guarantee the email will be delivered or even read.
I already left reddit a while ago following trend of wise people who did it before me because reddit got buried in stupid memes, cats pictures and copypasta. Comments lost insight and the hive mind took over.
that's because you loosely apply the "social network" label to some centralized websites but from I fail to see how the internet it self it not a social network, from IRC to email, newsgroups, forums, bbs, instant messaging, and so on.
Everything online is social and networking.
Rest assured yahoo! as google, microsoft, facebook or any other entity throwing money at owners to buy their property will screw it up, most of the times they buy to prevent it from happening in the first place.
You should die a slow and painful agony in a fire while eaten by rats on steroids or something even worse if available.
When I encounter this stupidity and I really want to register, I will first try again with scripts disabled, if your form is broken and requires scripts to work and I still want to register despite the insanity I will use other ways of copy-pasting (middle click, re-assigning shortcut, editing the form).
But usually when a registration form gives me a big "fuck you" by misusing scripts to disable basic computing features, I move away because I'm older and wiser now, when I was young and stupid I would find a way to rack the hosting bill of the moron who designed this stupid stupidity.
Why do registration process require an email address in the first place ? Unless the website owner wants to send spam or resell the list of email addresses there's no obvious reason to make it mandatory, this should be optional.
IMHO website registration has been broken for a while.
> facebook is completely free and optional and no one is forcing you to use it.
Facebook certainly not free, far from it actually and that's a root cause of what's wrong and sucks with facebook.
You're not paying with money but with personal information, refer to how google went from a search engine to an ad seller.
Facebook is barely optional since everybody and their grandma and their dog are using it, as someone who refused since day to register on facebook, social pressure to get a facebook account is real and powerful.
I had to renounce relationships and staying in touch with many people I wanted to stay in touch with because their only mean of online communication is facebook, and there's not a month without someone pointing me to facebook to interact with them or know about upcoming events.
It's even worse with younger generations and in north america where not having facebook lead to being ostracized.
I am mostly for the ostensible removal of YouTube comments, all of them and the ability to comment too.
I would not miss youtube if it were to be closed down tomorrow and the whole world would receive an increase of productivity as a result.
It's been a while since youtube started restricting access to video that have been flagged. I don't remember when exactly but in 2009 there were already videos explaining how to circumvent this "feature": http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lUkrX7PZNok
Then there are the video you can't watch from third party websites and from certain regions and so on.
It is an improbable possibility that google will require to be logged in to watch youtube videos, but it's still could happen one day.
Experience led me to not get a gmail when the service opened, actually I stayed away of anything google (except the search engine while it provided relevant results) since it switched from being a search engine to an ads seller based on profiling of people.
Then being hired to uncover people's identity from their online activity in times before so called "social networks" were coined led me to never register on friendster, myspace or any other followers of this trend.
I failed to see the benefits of linkedin which still spams on a regular basis (if anyone knows how to stop receiving emails from linkedin...) and saw where facebook was headed in their attempt to be the new msn which for those who remember was microsoft attempt to destroy the internet by replacing it with a microsoft owned network which came bundled with windows 95.
I value freedom, therefore privacy, I refuse to be the product being sold and hate with a passion anything ads-based for I have experienced the web before ads which is the vector from which privacy invasion and surveillance came to be.
For some reason people started to offer money to display ads banner on websites but asked for at least a way to count and track clicks on those banners and It's been all downhill from there.
For those who read TAZ by Hakim Bey he put the end of the potential of the web to put the people in power around 1996 when ads came to the web and turned it into a surveillance tool.
the second I read "build apps" I knew this is not even close to an alternative models.
the only alternative model is decentralized, encrypted and pseudonymous/anonymous. Maybe something along the lines of btsync, btchat mixed with pursuit [1].
This is a stupid suggestion that has no place in an encyclopedia, then again wikipedia is not an encyclopedia, but still this suggestion belongs on a specialized community forum or website.
Wikipedia is already dying a slow and painful agony and has been for a while, no need to accelerate it by adding more trivia and irrelevant features to it.
I did use bing maps though as they are incredibly better than google maps.
