Asking a question here that I long wanted to ask.
Is it possible to have a python handler function that uses duckdb to query a S3 hosted parquet file and that uses pandas for some data manipulation, run as a WASM app? (leveraging all features of duckdb like predicate pushdown etc)

Or is it that you are able to run firecracker on normal vm instances in gcp ?

It depends on the requirements like
1. requirements for having a self host version or acceptance of having cloud offering
2. data connector requirements (not all products will have native connectors to all data sources)
3. data blending requirements (not all products will have data blending capabilities to the same tune)
4. data size requirements (some support data in MBs, some can support data in PB's)
5. Programming knowledge requirements (some may have only non technical users using the product, some may have technical users who need finer control)
6. Visualisation options
7. Various Reproting options (some may have pdf export option, while some others may not have this)
....and the list is really long
There are a large number of parameters in deciding to choose a BI/Reporting solution
One can probably pickup a particular requirement and evaluate the best in class for that requirement. There is no one solution which excels in every single field.

As someone from India, I have huge respect for Uber. The taxi unions here were looting people. They were quite arrogant. In Bangalore, most auto taxi drivers would happily stay idle for the whole day, and try to make some quick bucks during the rush hours by charging 300% or 400% extra, until Uber came and killed their arrogance.
Uber may not have had the same level of technical innovations as SpaceX. But they do have mammoth execution challenges, to the scale that no company might have had to face so far. For eg, in India, in each of the 29 states , they have to deal with the regulators of each state. In hundreds of cities, they have to deal with the respective taxi unions. Extrapolate it to a global scale , I can't even imagine.

The dominos ordering app in India had a terrible flow a while back. Once the products are added to the cart and proceeded to checkout , the flow was as follows
1. First a payment collection flow is initiated from the browser (asking Credit Card details, pin etc)
2. The payment confirmation comes to the browser
3. The browser then places the order(the pizza information) to another api end point, marking the payment part as 'Paid'
The thing is, one could add as many pizzas to the cart in a different tab, while the original tab proceeds to payment. The end result is, you get to pay only for pizzas that were initially in the cart, but could get any number of pizzas. For literally Rs100 one could order thousands of rupees worth pizza.
I discovered it accidentally and did report to them. Neither did they acknowledge nor did they send me a free pizza :(
They later fixed this, by not allowing to load the cart in a different tab. But there is a high chance that there could be another hack even now. Since I had wowed not to eat junk food anymore, there was not much incentive for me to spend any more time on it.
Just like 'There is no such person as Good CEO', but only 'A Good CEO for a particular company, at a particular point of time', there is no such a person as 'Good Programmer', there is only 'A Good Programmer for a particular job, at a particular point of time'.
Context matters a lot. One does not use an AK-47 to kill a mosquito. It is terrible for that job. But that does not make AK-47 a terrible weapon.
