I know of a small business in upstate NY that gets 80% of their sales from FB ads. Without FB, this business which also has a retail store, would certainly be having a lot more of a rough time. And they are not an isolated story. I know of at least 5 other small businesses that similarly generate from 25% to 70% of sales via FB. It's given these small businesses a way to compete against bigger competitors.
Reading this brought me to tears. Tears of nostalgia.
nostalgia, sad and hopeful all at once, when the familiar and the alien mingle, as when we revisit the childhood streets where our friends are no more, or when we return all alone to the site of some joyful memory.
You make a good point. I wonder how is drug marketing handled in places like EU. How do their doctors learn of new drugs and decide which meds to prescribe?
Solo founder here. You have to have a growth mindset. It is your oxygen.
I was speaking to an entrepreneur today, trying to learn about his industry and sell him marketing services. The guy kept coming up with reasons not to grow. Even when I asked him, what if you had 20 more customers willing to spend $15K (his dream cust), he said he would have problems fulfilling those customers.
This guy does not have a growth mindset. Maybe that's by choice; maybe he is happy with the current revenue, which is fine.
But as a new entrepreneur, a growth mindset is essential. The best way I know to overcome this is to have a coach or even better a coach who has already built that kind of business you are trying to build.
When Sun bought Marsh Supermarkets, the company had three retirement plans. One for the top five Marsh executives, one for the store employees, and one for the warehouse workers.
Only the executives’ plan, however, was fully funded under the sales agreement: With the completion of Sun’s purchase, Marsh’s top five executives were to be awarded $14 million in retirement payments, according to company financial documents. Among them: CEO Don Marsh at $7 million and corporate counsel P. Lawrence Butt at $2.2 million.
Meanwhile, the other two retirement plans — the worker pensions — were short millions of dollars.
In the short-term, Zuckerberg maybe the CEO, but if he keeps prioritizing ads over product (which he has done with FB prod/privacy), then the long-term maybe dicey.
Just as content is king, so product will always be king. The ads will follow whoever has the best product, and hence user attention.
I agree, it sucks. It needs to be disrupted. There's got to be a better way to maintain professional and business relationships. Facebook has co-opted some of that need via FB groups.
I dislike the interface, it loads slow, almost 90% of messages are spam. They tried to be a content hub, but the only content hubs I read are HN, Quora, NYT and random blogs.
The Chinese government deployed a similar tactic in Sri Lanka, building a sea part that is unnecessary, with easy loans, which Sri Lanka defaulted on, leading to China taking ownership. It then deployed a submarine to the port, alarming both Sri Lanka and India.
