I went through pretty much the same dance yesterday trying to figure out the right way to choose a directory in my SwiftUI app.
SwiftUI is a wonderful UI toolkit but it's far from complete. The documentation Apple is creating for it is wonderful, check out: https://developer.apple.com/tutorials/swiftui
The issues listed are Finder issues. I haven't seen them. Finder is vulnerable to connected storage devices. I did have a dodgy USB drive connected to one machine and all sorts of weird things happened, such as beach balling, until I disconnected it.
One problem of having old WWDC content available is that it is confusing for a developer searching for how to do something to be shown deprecated approaches. It's hard enough finding the right way to do something in Swift with all the old versions of the language around.
