I've seen people say this a repeatedly when talking about "embedded" environments, but never understood why - won't it end up compiling to the same thing either way?
I have a meta-proposal. Random westerners are a terrible source of ideas - you should talk to people from developing countries and if possible go there. The local knowledge will be 100x more useful than anything we can come up with.

I had thought someone had done a perl 1 release that built on modern systems, but on a quick hunt I can't find it.
I used to find http://musicforhackers.com/ the perfect background to coding, but they're down, and I've never worked out another source of the sort of stuff they played.
I've just switched to xubuntu for similar reasons.
I'm finding it a big improvement on gnome 3 or unity so far, although I've only been using it for about a week, so I still count it as testing at the moment.
The reasoning appears to be "since technique X can cause problems in some circumstances, it can never be used in software for domain Y (usually avionics, space, or similar)".
However, obviously every technique could cause problems in some circumstances. Therefore I conclude it's impossible to ship software into space.
Since software clearly is shipped into space, it seems likely there is some problem with the above argument. My suspect is the "could cause problems? Can't use it!" line of reasoning is oversimplified for the purposes of explanation, and hopefully something better justified is actually occurring.
