I'm a Slovene with fond memories going to FKK camps in Croatia. Koversada is like a small city where everyone is naked all the time except visiting the shop or restaurant. I feel that FKK culture has a lot to offer to children especially as they see all the varieties of naked bodies which probably helps with self-image in later years.
While I don't go to FKKs anymore due to my wife, we still hunt beaches where we can be naked all day.
Biochemist with a PhD, leading a group for bioprocess development and scale up. Been following hackernews for a few years now. Probably found it via digg or reddit, don't remember really. The things I like about NH is the minimalist UI and very high signal/noise ratio in the comments.
I have also played with the idea to switch professions for quite some time, but my programming skills include only basic python and microcontrollers. But in the end I always realise I'm very good at what I do and have a PhD in the field so it would not really make sense to switch and start over.
I'm not a petrochemist, but I think reforming/cracking is an old technology which allows you to produce syngas and smaller alkanes (methane, propane etc).
IIRC smokers change their inhaling patterns with 'light' cigarettes - they inhale more deeply and prolong the nictoine absorbtion time. In the EU its illegal to brand cigarettes as light.
I skimmed the article and I think the author should have used CaCl2 to improve the gelling strenght. Ca-alginate which is comparable in structure forms gels in very low concentrations when Ca ions are present.
From data (Mycorrhizal Functioning: An Integrative Plant-Fungal Process; Michael Allen) an estimate of 200cm per gram of soil is mentioned. This would translate to 2000m per kilogram and 2.000.000m = 2000km per tonne of soil. A cubic meter of soil should weight on average 2.6g/mL so it would come out even higher at 5200 km per cubic meter.
The Haber-Bosch process is not dependent on fossil fuels. With renewable sources (biogas instead of methane for H2 generation) the process is more expensive, but there are no technical limitations here that mandate the use of fossil fuels.
With advances in biotech and possible harnessing of biological nitrogen fixation we might overcome even this...
Google mooch battery guide. He's a member of the vaping comunity and tests batteries for vaping which usually need high current (and capacity) ratings.
He also has links to trusted suppliers of liion batteries.
No, I live in the EU with full insurance, but going to a doctor would mean going there during working hours, waiting a few hours, getting a script and going to the pharmacy. Essential oils OTOH could be delivered by mail and even though I had to pay for them convenience won out. But considering the emergence of antifungal resistance it might have been a good choice in the end ;)
I cured mine with 10vol.% lavender oil + 10vol.% thyme oil in carrier oil (grapeseed oil). I couldn't be bothered by going to a doctor and it worked fine. Essential oils are non-selectively toxic so do be careful.
