If tools are evaluated by their leverage, and if Slack needs less effort (in form of training, etc) to achieve the same result as email/IRC, then isn't it reasonable to suggest that Slack is better? However, I think it is interesting to think about the method they used to achieve that increased leverage. In Slack's case it may not be an entirely new set of features, but just more optimal designs and implementations of existing feature sets. Should that necessarily "count for less"? I would argue no, if tools are evaluated by their leverage.
Their real gripe is in their belief that the average American is clueless about what goes into that ~5% unemployment stat.
BLS is transparent enough to make this criticism unwarranted, but the media/press covering unemployment statistics certainly aren't careful to define the stats they use.
Whether the 'sleight of hand' is intentional or not is another story (I'm inclined to say it's not, people just need a figure to benchmark to)
...not sure. could make the argument that HN attracts more 'intellectuals/non-sports fans', if we're making that classification. And therefore it's a topic of universal interest here (not that that makes it topical)
worth noting though, that the separation of the two groups [educated/non-sports] and [sports] is probably related to cost of activities ($basketball < $computers or tutors) and also related to the simple probability that top x% intellectuals and top x% athletes aren't likely to overlap. Everyone in-between is then forced to pick sides/friends...and sports-talk is super social/accessible.
I really think the medium for recording/displaying history has a lot to do with how 'current' recent history feels. And I think b/w to color is a much bigger jump than SD -> HD.
e.g. 'WWII in color' films make things feel remarkably more relatable than B/W footage
Wouldn't be surprised if we see a similar change, if not more dramatic, if/when VR becomes a more prevalent form of media
Eg: i think my kids will likely be more comfortable, have more convenience, than me — but i worry a lot they will be more anxious and lonely.
I don’t personally believe this gets solved through regulation, religion, or self-discipline.
imo we just need technology products that drastically reduce the cost of things that make us less anxious and lonely
