If you are clicking through menus all day or are otherwise negatively affected to such a degree by a visual change like this, you are an amateur
So really, JetBrains is bringing consumer-grade UI practices to the world of... amateurs
This world for amateurs exists exists, as a crutch, within the larger world of the professional product.
However, the world of professional usage of Intellij remains essentially unchanged (granted, the new icons and extra negative space are annoying, they just are not significant)
Same thing happened at a previous company I worked at about one year into the pandemic.
We still gave the guy until the end of the week to prove he could be useful.
He wasn't, so we let him go, but we would have kept him on if he was competent. Despite the fraud. Because it was such a pain to find a good dev at that time (not easy now, but not as hard, subjectively)
Totally agree. I've been getting up to speed just fine at my new and (at least for now) fully remote job.
If you're struggling to fill the gaps or onboard people at a certain point you have to admit to either managerial or organizational failure to adapt. It's called taking responsibility
I'm not sure I would even agree with this. I have a better monitor setup at home, a quieter place to work and think, and I'm spending less of my day in pointless conversations for the sake of politeness.
My employer simply gets more out of me when I work from home AND turnover is reduced.
I think the pros outweigh the cons for employers, even if they don't care at all about their employees and even if we weren't in a tight labor market
you would be surprised at what a large effect the removal of friction can have. I bet this will convince a decent chunk of people that dual booting isn't worth it
It's almost like China wants to make sure nobody ever lets them near useful IP again. This just seems counterproductive for them in the long run, though if you understand geopolitics better than I do, please help my understand how this is a good long-term strategy for China
It's small. But as an avid fisherman and boater who would like to live in either Wisconsin or Michigan, this could be a deciding factor (remote work is only temporary for me right now, but theoretically it might make a difference for me, though the Michigan winters would probably still be a non-starter)
