I know this article talk about savings, even if it was costs would be of value.

And still is. The thing is, either you are used to it, or you just feel ok with the defaults.

I understand why Unity or GNOME are following the "simplicity, you stupid" path. It gets mom, dad and girlfriend to use the system without putting much effort into it. However, I stick to fluxbox, I have got my widgets, my funky pager, my switching, and it feels personal, and fun.

The UN said that cutting down someone's Internet was a human right violation, not that broadband Internet is a basic human right (maybe it's implicit, but it's not the main purpose of the definition).

Now, on court, you could appeal to human rights (and, worst case scenario, to AI) if, for instance, you are being prosecuted for rousing up an insurgent concentration on Facebook. Equally, the UN could interpose when a country decides to cut off the Internet to avoid communication during chaos or protests.

G+ is ok for google even if it is not popular.

It has managed to get 400m users, linked to gmail accounts, which, at the same point will be linked to analytics.

Even a really basic filling out of the profile (name, location, age) is better than guessing for them.

Being a coder and not a designer, I can spot some blatant errors in microsoft.com current design:

1. Flicker when you enter the site. It seems there's some heavy javascript code resizing layers to fit my window size.

2. Weird color decisions, specially the blue and orange on the first two slides of the carousel, and the hover on the newsfeed on the bottom of the site.

3. Not really professional photographs. I mean, I get it, Microsoft goes for the "PCs are for everyone", but these images still look stock, and would expect to see them in most corporation sites.

As much work and sometimes (depending on the office) isolation as it generates, I would go for bringing food from my home, and reserve canteens for just 1 or 2 days per week.

Setting up your own git server is pretty easy, in fact, trivial with ssh + authorized_keys

I could refer you to any tutorial, but I am feeling lazy too, so here, an easy guide:

-- On the server --

1. create an account, call it "git", or "dog"

2. disable shell access for that account in /etc/passwd

   - /bin/false

3. enter that account, and set up a bare git repo:

   - mkdir myrepo.git

   - git init --bare myrepo.git

4. add your public key(s) to ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on "git" or "dog" account

-- On your client(s) --

1. Clone the repo

   - git clone git@your_server:myrepo.git

   - dog@...

Ready to go. You can even use git hooks to automate the pull.

It's such a pity interesting teachers like you (judging by your post) are only available at special programs.

I can count good teachers in my life with just one hand (and not in binary), and when you think about it, about how they really made a difference in who you are right now, it blows my mind to think what could happen if all teachers were that good.

Today I bought a Nokia 1280[1], it's pretty good. You do not need to adapt your site to its screen, though.

What I miss here is why some projects are not being honest on their pitch videos. It is not a problem with backers not understanding how funding works:

If someone advertises their project as being finished, and is just asking money to get into the manufacturing phase, backers will expect that.

The same way, if they show a nifty idea, explain that they do not even know how it will look like, but sell their team as someone that could eventually do it, backers will also know and accept failure as a possibility.
