Nostalgia makes for great motivation. I still remember staying up late critiquing some of these.
The important part, though, is that we are now far beyond the point where mobile devices need pseudo 3d for games. And even Lou moved on to OpenGL eventually.
I would freak the hell out if I were soloing this sucker for the first time. I imagine the tandem trainer version would be extremely uncomfortable, as well.
I like the idea of crowdsourcing menial tasks, but crowsourcing what's fundamentally a judgement call is a horrifying prospect.
The presented scenario is of a nervous foreigner who might happen to be asocial, and might have different cultural norms. He has claustrophobia but, like everyone else on that plane, has somewhere to be. So he's nervous and sweating. He gets airsick. Then he gets a body search because a few rich, white, self-important xenophobes notice he's not like them. Sounds like a recipe for in-air bullying, to me.
Local storage, canvas, mobile location and websockets/long polling. I'd been away from the frontend for quite some time (2006-2008, an epoch in web standards terms) and learning these tools was a big part of 2008/09.
While I'm not convinced of any flash-killer status, I've definitely seen/done enough to keep me interested.
The good thing is that it's cool. The bad thing is that sucks your attention inside the cabin, instead of putting your head on the swivel for traffic. Not a problem if you've got flight following or TCAS, but definitely one of the things that my local FBO warns against.
Robotics, general aviation, motorbikes, running, reading. I gave my vices a break when I decided that my body and mind were too important. Now I just like going fast, amassing a robot army and reading Russian and German literature. I'd like travel more if I were Richie Rich, but holding down a consulting service while on the road is taxing (as it was in 2008.)
From when I had this same idea (watching a movie and taking a leak while not losing information): Icecast on Linux and Windows. Nowadays there's PulseAudio's RTP Multicast on Linux, but that sucker's massive as far as bandwidth leeching. Or Shoutcast if you need to support all three platforms.
Problem: unless you're clever about setting up your speakers, you'll get phase problems when you pass between two rooms (sound travels very slowly, after all) just like with the radio. That used to drive me up a wall, so I abandoned my project pretty early on.
What? Evolution happens epoch over epoch, not in action. My only hope in being launched into space in a shitty little rocket is to blow up in a massive regulation-inducing ball of guilt.
Also, I find it hilarious that I got downvoted a lot. Let me get downvoted more for saying the following: John Gault should be launched into space, with a railroad spike up his rear.
Heh heh heh.
I hate HN's Republican/Libertard contingent. Peace out, Randians.
Given that John Carmack is a massive Republican jerk, part of me wants to say "socialism (and Jet A subsidization) rules!" The rest of me wants to steal the rocket and fire myself into lower earth orbit.
When I saw that horrible hand-drying contraption, my first thought was "am I required to put my hands above shoulder-level to get them dry?" My second was "will it amputate my hands at the wrist?"
Tornado sorta makes me feel better about development, mainly because Twisted is phenomenally intimidating, like a black monolith.
A lot of people ignore common sense for platitudes. Sensationalist pro-greenwash caterwauling is just another trend among many that persists across generations, since before our modern era of lulz-inducing post-pamphleteers (Wells, Chesterton, etc.)
