As somebody that spends a lot of time in Spain I can confirm people read a lot compared to the US in general. Seeing a bunch of teenagers in a park reading books is very common and even in rural town where I stay elder people are well read
I have 2 kids and we have a single Kia soul and a little house I do most of the work. I pay for a good private school mostly out of fear of big schools and gun violence in the US and giving my kids multilingual education. I can assure the rich kids have a lot of problems and have a schedule like a company CEO, they go to our place and have a blast, free range fun. The kids need money thing is mostly a marketing thing the system puts into parents minds.
Working on https://github.com/codeadict/gen_http a low level HTTP client library for Erlang that full featured clients can build on top of. Erlang's default HTTP client httpc is great but has a lot of process overhead, consumes memory and doesn't support HTTP2. This is heavily inspired by Mint in Elixir
Neither Cuba or Venezuela held elections for a while and they put in jail or disappear anybody that says the minimum word about the ruling government, not even fighting just saying anything. (source born and raised in Cuba and all my family lives there, just this week one teacher got 10 years in prison for writing something about the president ). Cuba had oil from Venezuela and instead of using it for the actual people and electricity, they were selling it to third party countries to enrich GAESA the company of the Castro family that even the president of Cuba has no control over. So the people are no worse now with the US tensions, everybody there wants a little help to end the suffering caused by commies for years.

Shameless plug since i'm a contributor but VerneMQ [1] is a pretty programmable one. You have options from using webhooks to writting your plugins in Lua or Erlang/Elixir.
These 3 reasons ring closely, its what i see in my own family. They are Cuban and came here older and have never bothered to learn the language mostly out of fear of being too old or loosing their culture. They also have their own micro country were they can get Spanish speaking doctors, jobs and community to socialize. They can go months without hearing a word in English. Confidence is big to learn a language, my own kids are 5 and 6 and they can write / read and speak Spanish and English and speak in french but my son is less extroverted and fallsback more to English on front of people.

I crossed the Darien gap escaping from Cuba to the US. I still have nightmares about it 8 years later, the nature was impressing now that i think back and we found some nice/helpful communities there but got some kind of parasite on my feet from crossing a river and had to stay 10 days in a village taking herbs to continue the path.
This is exactly what the Oban https://getoban.pro/ Elixir library uses and combining postgres plus actors for queues scales pretty great for 90% of the needs out there. I have used it at my last few jobs at pretty decent scale and would take it over 10 years using Celery to manage queues + supervisord, setting up RabbitMQ or Redis. Its so simple you only need Elixir and Postgres and not 3 or 4 infrastructure pieces to manage a queue.
